Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards 2013 – winners

The Cinema Audio Society presented the 49th Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2012 last night at the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. KTLA Entertainment Reporter Sam Rubin returned again this year to host the ceremony.

The top award for Motion Picture – Live Action went to Les Miserables for its complex and demanding requirements arising from director Tom Hooper's ambitious goal of recording the singing live, and without any pre-recorded tracks or accompaniment.

Typically, musicals are filmed with lip-synching and all of the music is from pre-recorded tracks. Hooper had them sing live to a keyboard accompanist, allowing them to be more free with their timing and acting, with excellent results including Anne Hathaway's famed rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream." Microphones were placed on both shoulders of the actors and removed digitally afterwards. Orchestral accompaniment was added after editing.

The winner in the Motion Picture – Animated category was the Disney film Brave.

The CAS Career Achievement Award was presented to Production Sound Mixer Chris Newman and the CAS Filmmaker Award went to director Jonathan Demme.

2013 Premios Goya (Spanish film awards) – winners

The Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of Cinematic Art and Science) held the 27th Annual Premios Goya (Goya Awards) ceremony this evening at Centro de Convenciones y Congresos Príncipe Felipe in Madrid. The host of the event was comedian, actress and television hostess Eva Hache.

Pablo Berger's Blancanieves, the black-and-white silent film loosely based on the Snow White fairy tale, dominated the night with ten wins. It had led the field with eighteen nominations. Its wins included Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Maribel Verdú) and Best New Actress (Macarena García).

The gala suffered an embarrassing moment as Best Original Song presenters Adriana Ugarte and Carlos Santos mistakenly announced the winner as "Líneas paralelas" by Víctor M. Peinado, Pablo José Fernández Brenes and Pablo Cervantes Gutiérrez from the film Els nens salvatges (The Wild Boys). As the musicians went up to receive their award, the presenters apologized and announced the correct winner as "No te puedo encontrar" by Pablo Berger and Juan Gómez 'Chicuelo'.

J.A. Bayona was a surprise winner for the Best Director with Lo imposible (The Impossible). It won a total of five awards, the others all in the technical/craft categories.

The children's animated feature Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones (Tad, the Lost Explorer) by Enrique Gato picked up a trio of awards. Best Supporting Actress winner was Candela Peña for Una pistola en cada mano (A Gun in Each Hand). It was her third Goya win after having won for Princesas and Te doy mis ojos (Take My Eyes).

Actor Javier Bardem picked up his sixth Goya but his first non-acting award for producing the Best Documentary winner Hijos de las nubes, la última colonia (Sons of the Clouds).

Juan de los muertos (Juan of the Dead) by Alejandro Brugués claimed the trophy for Best Iber-American Film. Intouchables (The Intouchables) by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache was named the Best European Film.

An Honourary Goya was presented to actress and singer Concha Velasco.

Carly Rae Jepsen leads the pack with five nominations!

The nominees for the 2013 JUNO Awards were announced by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) at a press conference in Toronto this morning, as Canada’s top artists now get ready for a trip to the Prairies during JUNO Week in Regina and Moose Jaw, April 15 – April 21, 2013.

It was also announced that 2013 JUNO Award nominees Carly Rae Jepsen, Billy Talent, Marianas Trench and Michael Bublé will perform during the Sunday, April 21 broadcast from Regina’s Brandt Centre. Additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks! Bublé, the host of The 2013 JUNO Awards Broadcast, airing live on CTV, is also nominated this year and will contend for the JUNO Fan Choice Award.

It wasn’t even close to a maybe. Carly Rae Jepsen definitely got the call in 2013. The B.C.-born pop star leads with nominations in five categories: JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year. Close behind her is Justin Bieber who will contend for Album of the Year, JUNO Fan Choice, Artist of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year.

Landing their first-ever JUNO Award nominations in the Breakthrough Artist of the Year category (formerly New Artist of the Year)— are up-and-coming artists Cold Specks, Elisapie, Grimes, Kira Isabella, and The Weeknd.

In Breakthrough Group of the Year (formerly New Group of the Year) – the nominees hoping to take home a JUNO Award are Hey Ocean!, Monster Truck, The Pack a.d., Walk off the Earth, and Yukon Blonde.

Canadian legend Leonard Cohen received three nods for JUNO Fan Choice, Artist of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year. But he isn’t the only one in the Cohen family getting attention. His son, Adam Cohen, has been nominated for the inaugural Adult Contemporary Album of the Year. Fellow nominees in the new category are Barlow, Raylene Rankin, The Tenors, and Céline Dion. Dion received two other nominations for JUNO Fan Choice, and Album of the Year.

Rock Album of the Year nominees include Big Wreck, Rush, The Tragically Hip, The Sheepdogs, and Billy Talent vying for the win. The Sheepdogs and Billy Talent will also face off in two other categories: Single of the Year and Group of the Year.

Other triple nominees include Metric for Group of the Year, Alternative Album of the Year, and JUNO Fan Choice; Hedley for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year; and Marianas Trench for JUNO Fan Choice, Album of the Year, and Group of the Year.

The 34th Rhubarb Festival kicks off tonight at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.

For two weeks, over 100 local and international artists transform Buddies in Bad Times Theatre into a hotbed of creativity and experimentation, sharing new ideas in contemporary theatre, performance art, dance, and music with adventure-loving audiences.

One of the few critic-free environments available to local artists, Rhubarb is the place to see the most
adventurous ideas that artists have to offer and to catch your favourite performers venture into uncharted territory. This year, look for familiar faces, new partnerships, and artists you may have never seen before.

http://buddiesinbadtimes.com/

2013 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
• Sook-Yin Lee teams up with dance artist Benjamin Kamino for her first theatrical offering since the age of 14.
• The incomparable Nina Arsenault presents a new work based on her life-long fascination with Cleopatra.
• ‘Ladybear Extraordinaire’ and mainstay of Toronto’s queer night life, Fay Slift teams up with performing artists Trixie & Beever and Kaleb Robertson to present a high-drag reimagining of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
• The return of The One-To-One Performance Series. One of the highlights of last year’s festival, this program presents a collection of intimate experiences designed for a single performer and one audience member at a time.
• Playwright Nicolas Billon returns to Rhubarb with The Faroe Islands – the final instalment in the Fault Lines trilogy, which includes the multi-award winning plays Greenland and Iceland.
• Weekly late-night cabarets devoted to all things sexual, and curated by three of Toronto’s leading voices on sex – Now Magazine sex columnist Alex Tigchelaar, sexual health activist Mikiki, and community organizer and artist Kim Crosby.

THE MEETING PLACE OF ART AND ACTIVISM
As a hotbed of radical experimentation and one of the few critic-free performance environments in Toronto, Rhubarb has long been a politically charged arena. This year, many artists are tackling issues head on with bold projects that infuse their artistic practice with political actions, and respond to pressing issues of discrimination and oppression.

• Rhubarb is partnering with Videofag for the performance intervention Vigil(ance) that responds to both recent and ongoing instances of violence on the streets of Toronto. Jordan Tannahill and William Christopher Ellis take audiences to locations where they feel unsafe so that they can be occupied and reclaimed.
• Artists will take on sexual taboos, discrimination and injustices in a pair of raucous late-night cabarets happening every Thursday night. In Week One, Alex Tigchelaar gathers a group of female artists and activists – including Jess Dobkin, Christine Pountney, Keisha Scott, and Zoe Whittall – to take on the historical erasure of women from art and social justice movements. In Week Two, Kim Crosby and Mikiki team up for a radical celebration of sex, smut, spirituality, and pleasure in the face of slut shaming and sexual violence.
• Winnipeg’s Coral Maloney and Ian Mozdzen take on the queer fetishization of cowboy culture in the riotous protest/performance WEproteSTern
• Also look for a wide selection of works that reacts to experiences of political and personal discrimination, including a response to racism within the queer community from dance sensations ILL NANA DiverseCity Dance Company and an exploration of the effects of repression on art and the human body from Adam Paolozza.

RESPONDING TO A NEED FOR INTIMACY
In stark contrast to a world that is increasingly impersonal and interactions take place almost entirely on-line, artists this year are bringing courageously intimate works to the stage to help us all reconnect in a way that only live performance can.
• The popular One-To-One Performance Series returns for a second year with a collection of close encounters designed for a single artist and one audience member at a time. Breaking down barriers between audience and performer, these projects intimately engage with audiences through acts of hand holding (Bruce Barton’s All Good Things), healing rituals (Andrew Zealley’s Disco Hospital), surrender and trust (Cathy Gordon’s Moles Dancing), remembering the dead (Rachel Steinberg’s Eulogy), and more. All of the One-to-One performances will take place at The 519 Church Street Community Centre.
• Performance artist Vincent Chevalier takes on the way we all perform ourselves on-line with an indepth disclosure of his own personal history, performed in the style of a blog
• Dance artist Andrew Tay offers up a heart warming piece that reconnects us to each other through the spirituality of shared experience.

A NEW HOME FOR DANCE ARTISTS
Rhubarb is fast becoming the venue of choice for artists with radical new experimentations in dance, and this year boasts one of our biggest dance contingents in recent memory. This year, look for adventurous and daring new dance works from George Stamos, Andrew Tay, Davy Bisaro, Sasha Kleinplatz, Ill Nana DiverseCity Dance Company, Benjamin Kamino, Brandy Leary and Priscilla Guy.

QUEER ARTISTS ON STAGE
As always, Rhubarb is the go-to venue for exciting new work by queer artists. Queer names to watch at this year’s fest include Nina Arsenault, Jordan Tannahill, Mikiki, Roy Mitchell, Vag Halen, Vincent Chevalier, Nichola Ward, Nat & Joce Tremblay, Johnny Forever, William Christopher Ellis, George Stamos, Trixie & Beever, Brescia Bloodbeard, Andrew Zealley, Kaleb Robertson, Gein Wong, Andrew Tay, and the members of Buddies’ Young Creators Unit. 3/3

SHOWCASING THE BEST OF CANADA’S THEATRE SCENE
This year also hosts a stellar collection of Canada’s most acclaimed theatre artists and rising stars as they test the boundaries of their work. Look for new works by Adam Paolozza, Michael Rubenfeld, Leora Morris, Nicolas Billon and Ravi Jain, Coral Maloney and Ian Mozdzen, Brescia Bloodbeard, Jessica Moss, Bruce Barton, and more.

HOW IT WORKS
Rhubarb is not like other festivals. There are plenty of different ways to see performances, you rarely see only one show, you’re travelling from place to place, and you often end up seeing something you never expected. Here’s a handy cheat sheet to help you decide what you want to see, and explain how you go about seeing it – all of the headings refer to the colour-coded bars you see in the show descriptions
Week One & Week Two Programs. These 12 shows run for an entire week, Wednesday to Sunday evenings, in one of the two performance spaces at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. At any given point, there are shows happening in both spaces, so when you arrive at the theatre pick the show you want to see first, and 30 minutes later when it’s done you can either stay where you are or move to the other space for your next performance. A $20 Evening Pass gets you in to the entire night of programming.
Special Presentations. These shows are special events that happen after the regular program for one or two nights only. Admission to Special Presentations is included in your Evening Pass.
Mobile Works. These are special performances designed for public spaces, and happen in various locations around the city. The location of each performance is included in its show listing above, and some of them either travel or take place outside so remember to bundle up. All Mobile Works presentations are free.
The One-To-One Performance Series. These are intimate performance designed for a single performer and one audience member at a time  – they all take place offsite at The 519 Church Street Community Centre. When booking your ticket, think of it like making an appointment: you can call ahead to our box office to schedule your personal time with an artist, or you can drop in to The 519 and see what’s available (a certain number of tickets for every performance will be held for drop-ins). Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can.
Young Creators Unit. These are 30 minute solo performances from four emerging voices that have been mentored through our Queer youth Arts Program. Performances take place every Saturday and Sunday beginning at 6PM. Each weekend features two different artists and your ticket gets you in to both performances. Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can.
Finally, a special note. The Faroe Islands will also be taking place offsite at The 519. While not a One-To-One performance, it is staged in an intimate environment for 10-15 people per show. Tickets to this Special Presentation are Pay-What-You-Can.

Canadian Art Foundation Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the Reel Artists Film Festival
North America’s Only Festival of Documentary Films About Visual Art and Artists

The 10th annual Reel Artists Film Festival, which runs from February 20 to 24, 2013, presents a selection of international feature-length and short documentaries that address challenges and questions raised by artists both in front of and behind the camera. Through these films, subjects are revealed, experimental processes unfold, and events are staged. It is with these three categories in mind—subject, process, event—that we celebrate RAFF’s anniversary and anticipate its future.

Our Opening Night Screening and Celebration revisits the legendary art collectors Herbert and Dorothy Vogel in a special excerpted version of Megumi Sasaki’s new film HERB & DOROTHY 50X50. Next in the program is Jef Cornelis’s Documenta 5 from 1972, a film essay covering this seminal event in contemporary art history, which gave new perspective on the idea of exhibition as spectacle.

In line with RAFF’s tradition of presenting films that document the lives and works of contemporary artists, 2013’s lineup offers a glimpse into the complex personalities of, among others, David AltmejdValérie BlassDamien Hirst and Mickalene Thomas. These films reveal the singular inspirations, experiments and techniques of some of the world’s most compelling artists.

Contemporary-art practices often transcend cultural and disciplinary boundaries, forging new relationships between objects and subjects, spaces and time. Artists who play with the idea of documentary show how cross- disciplinary connections can revitalize the medium, reigniting its creative potential. Simon Starling does this engagingly in two RAFF offerings, Black Drop and Project for a Masquerade (Hiroshima).

Like contemporary art, the documentary presents, constructs and reshapes reality—the very meaning of which changes through our encounter with it. In this way, a documentary can be a work of art. Films such as Picasso in PalestineTea and Somewhere to Disappear tell us about actual events, and provide an aesthetic perspective through which to view them. The film itself becomes the event.

It is with great pleasure that we present these films alongside a special program of talks by international and local filmmakers, artists, curators, critics and collectors that will generate an expanded public engagement with 21st-century art and artists.

Emeli Sandé tops off a phenomenal year by picking up the coveted MasterCard British Album Award as well as British Female Award

Tonight’s BRIT Awards, hosted for the fourth time by James Corden, were the perfect celebration of a vintage year. Muse started proceedings with an explosive performance featuring a huge orchestra and fireworks, setting the tone for the evening. 2012 was an extraordinary year for British music both at home and abroad.

This time last year saw Emeli Sandé win her first ever BRIT Award when she was chosen as the Critics’ Choice winner. 12 months on she scoops the biggest Award of the night, the MasterCard British Album Award, for her debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’ which has now been certified four times platinum and is close to sales of 1.5 million worldwide. Emeli was also honoured with the British Female accolade and gave a stunning performance for the BRITs finale.

Also performing on the night, Ben Howard was the only other artist to enjoy multiple wins – British Breakthrough (winner decided by public vote through brits.co.uk and BBC Radio 1) and British Male. Ben’s ‘Every Kingdom’ album was released at the end of 2011 and reached the Top 10 in the Official Album Charts.

Mumford & Sons picked up British Group. Coldplay beat competition from bands like the Rolling Stones and Muse to be presented with the reinstated British Live Act, their eighth BRIT Award to date. Last year’s MasterCard Album Award winner Adele was also honoured, winning the British Single Award (with Capital FM and iTunes) for ‘Skyfall’, her fourth BRIT Award in total.

One Direction received the first-ever Global Success Award (the UK act with the highest international sales during the 2012 calendar year, excluding UK). The band released their second album ‘Take Me Home’ in November, breaking chart records, to become the fifth biggest selling album in the US in 2012.

In the international categories Lana Del Rey picked up International Female Solo Artist, International Group went to The Black Keys and Frank Ocean won International Male Solo Artist.

In another first for the BRITs, Damon Albarn took to the stage to collect the Special Recognition Award on behalf of War Child as 2013 marks the charity’s 20th anniversary.

Performances on the night (in order of appearance) came from Muse (Supremacy), Robbie Williams (Candy), Justin Timberlake (Mirrors), One Direction (One Way Or Another), Taylor Swift (I Knew You Were Trouble), Ben Howard (Only Love), Mumford & Sons (I Will Wait) and Emeli Sandé (Clown/Next To Me).

This year’s BRITs performances will be available to download after the Awards on iTunes with all proceeds for the first month going to War Child (recipients of the new Special Recognition Award).

Saturn Awards 2013 – nominations

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the leading film with nominations for the prestigious Saturn Awards presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Peter Jackson’s return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth received 9 nominations. Other films receiving major nominations include Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (8 nominations), and the 23nd entry in the James Bond franchise, Skyfall (7 nominations).

Comic book icons-turned-cinematic spectacles, Marvel’s The Avengers and Christopher Nolan’s triumphant conclusion to his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, followed closely behind with 6 nominations each, along with the epic musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic Les Misérables. Warner Bros. received a leading total of 23 nominations, while Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures each received 14 nominations for their ambitious slate of films released last year.

Television Entertainment also received nominations from the 41 year old Academy. Leading this prestigious list was the beloved series, Fringe, which received 6 nominations and ended a five year run on the Fox Network. Other notable series receiving multiple nominations include Showtime’s Dexter (5 nominations), and with 4 nominations each, Breaking Bad (AMC), Falling Skies (TNT), Leverage (TNT), Revolution (NBC), and The Walking Dead (AMC).

The Saturn Awards is considered the premier award for the entertainment we dub “exaggerated and/or enhanced reality”. The scope of the genres we honor has been broadened in recent years running the gamut from dark and edgy entertainment to colorful and life-affirming fable-esque slices of life.

This year, the Academy is thrilled to inaugurate a new film category honoring independent film releases alongside the high-budgeted films which help drive the box-office. Organization President Robert Holguin states “I’ve long admired and respected independent filmmakers and their focused vision. I’m thrilled to see the organization create a category which expressively allows our membership to champion personal film projects which helps expand ideas and creativity in the genre field.”

This year’s 39th Annual Saturn Awards is slated to take place in June.

The MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE free outdoor site

Montreal, Tuesday, February 5, 2013 — One thing is certain: the programmers of the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE free outdoor site have the right winter spirit, and they’ve delivered a calendar packed with pleasure in all its forms for this 14th edition presented by RBC! There is pure foodie pleasure with the new formula offering gourmet pit-stops all over the site—a smash hit last year!—and musical delight with high-calibre free outdoor shows and DJ-VJ sets; the pleasure of rediscovering your childhood with a wild ride on the gigantic slide; gorgeous visuals courtesy of impressive artistic lighting on the site and mind-blowing projections on the surrounding facades that take the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE name absolutely literally! Yes, there will be 1001 paths to pleasure at this festival from February 21 to March 3, on the Place des Festivals, the Place des Arts esplanade and—a new addition this year—the Promenade des Artistes!

The return of the Escales gourmandes: feast before the fest!

Building on the strength of last year’s mega-success, our gourmet pit-stops are back! Once again, they’ll be ready to delight the most exacting gourmands, with an impressive variety of tastes for every budget… while also offering gourmet nods to our great featured city, Buenos Aires, and our American featured city, Philadelphia! Ladies and gentlemen, start your appetites! Head to the Petit Balmo for its Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and huge homemade pretzels, restaurant L’Atelier d’Argentine and its giant BBQ serving up vacio (beef) and cerdo (pork) sandwiches and empanadas, the Maison du chocolat and delectable products from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, kiosks offering Belgian waffles and frites, the Provigo Sphere where local producers invite you to discover regional treats…

The Promenade des Artistes

We’ve added a new “Main Street” to our site… which means even more activities! The festival’s free outdoor site extends even further into the Quartier des Spectacles by folding the Promenade des Artistes (De Maisonneuve Blvd.) into its program. You’ll find Totems exquis Casino de Montréal, a stunning interactive tableau inviting visitors to assemble strange, enormous creatures and project them onto UQAM’s Pavillon Président-Kennedy (presented in rotation with video projection Le jour des 8 soleils, courtesy of the Quartier des spectacles), as well as the photo exhibit marking the 10th anniversary of Nuit blanche. We thank the Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles, Tourisme Québec and the Arrondissement de Ville-Marie for making these activities possible.

The Place des Festivals

The heart of the action! Along with the Escales gourmandes, you’ll find activities for every taste. Whether it’s a ride on the Air France Ferris Wheel, a colourful interlude watching mind-blowing architectural lighting, dancing or enjoying a drink, or joining in a spontaneous and progressive visual creation with the Ballons interactifs Casino de Montréal (6 p.m. to 9 p.m., excluding Sundays and February 25 & 26), you’ll come back to this always-buzzing site time and time again. And festival fans will also be happy to learn that our most popular activities are back:

Bell mega-projection Abécédaire au carré: the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan takes centre stage

It was an immense success during the first Place des Festivals edition of MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE, and this mega-projection is sure to be a fan favourite again! To our delight, GEODEZIK returns with a new creative adventure in video-mapping presented by Bell, Abécédaire au carré, which once again promises to make our Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan look wild… 26 times over! The thousands of visitors who participated in last year’s presentation will tell you—it’s indescribable! You’ve got to see it to believe it! Don’t miss it, with three presentations every evening of the festival (6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., excluding February 24 to 26). Spectacular!

The RBC Dome

This year, the huge, eye-catching white sphere on the Place des Festivals becomes a 360º movie theatre! And a 20-metre sphere makes a very impressive silver screen! Don’t miss the film BLOOP, created by TURBINE and presented by the RBC Visa Avion Card in collaboration with the RBC Blue Water Project, relating the story of water in all its states. An immersive film screened continuously. On weekends, just outside the Dome, at the Vive le hockey RBC Tent, fans can also meet RBC Olympic athletes Benoit St-Amand (luge hockey gold medalist in the Paralympic Games) and Caroline Ouellette (ice hockey triple gold medalist, Winter Olympic Games).

L’Espace Financière Sun Life: entertainment… and a major event!

Located at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance Streets (right near the Musée d’art contemporain), this new zone offers a variety of entertainment throughout the festival, centred on the themes Warmth, Colour, Movement and Dance. And this is the site of the Sun Life Financial Big Family Photo, inviting all festival fans to gather with hand-held sparklers (to be distributed approx. 7:30 p.m.) and show their festival love. This unique photo will then be posted on our website, where all participants can have fun finding and tagging themselves. It’s an event you simply cannot afford to miss, on the first Saturday of the festival, February 23, around 7:30 p.m. The more the merrier!

Bell DJ-VJs

There’s no better way to heat up even the most glacial evening than dancing like a maniac! Join us for sets by the Bell DJ-VJs—still alongside the illuminated dome—every night at 9:15 p.m.: Roux Soundsystem (February 21), Black Tiger Sex Machine (February 22), Random Recipe DJ Set (February 23), Pablo Guadalupe, Drum Addiction (February 27), DJ Angelo (February 28), Sagewondah, French Connection DJs (March 1) and LEBARON, Rendez-vous musique (for Nuit blanche, March 2). The RBC Dome lights up with images courtesy of VJ Video Girl, VJ Brille Brille and VJ Ma’’, who’ll add their kaleidoscopic colours to the hippest beats.

The Zone Bell: braziers, lasers and a photo exhibit, Buenos Aires in Pictures !

And there are even more activities in the Zone Bell! On Ste. Catherine St., close by Balmoral St., visitors can experiment with the FIBE TV service in the Boîte Bell, unleash their creativity with the interactive laser game or take a break and relax around a brazier. Nobody will want to miss the photo exhibit Buenos Aires in Pictures: if the grand featured city of our 14th edition is a little far away in terrestrial terms, you can enjoy this charming visit in photos: tango, bares notables—the cafés so deeply entrenched in the Porteño heritage—and the cultural spaces and events that define it as the cultural capital of Latin America… In addition, you can discover more on the Argentinean capital and its tourist attractions at the info kiosk on Buenos Aires just next door.

Bistro SAQ

This lovely trio of geodesic domes presents cheeses, soups, duck confit, beef bourguignon and a selection of wines and beers daily, and also a special tasting evening starring duck in many presentations (details at the end of this communique).

Galerie of the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan: Tony Bennett, painter

For this 14th edition of MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE, the legendary singer offers us an immense privilege: presenting a major Montreal premiere featuring a selection of some of his loveliest pieces, signed Anthony Benedetto. Do not miss this unique opportunity to join us in the Galerie and discover another facet of the very talented Tony Bennett, accomplished painter and watercolorist, whose work will transport you with its emotive power and beauty. Free admission. From February 14 to April 14.

The Place des Arts esplanade

The RBC Stage

It’s absolutely essential! Where else can you catch extraordinary outdoor winter performances by some of today’s finest artists? Perfectly located on Ste. Catherine St., just slightly east of Jeanne-Mance, the RBC Stage once again serves up free shows guaranteed to thrill festival fans. First: fun for the kids, at 2 p.m., with Les Petites Tounes—rockers who no longer need an introduction!—the weekend of February 23-24, and the comtesse d’Harmonia (aka Joe Bocan), the following weekend (March 2 and 3), with her show Pour faire danser la terre… Then, at 8 p.m., we welcome Dumas, a born performer, who kicks off the party February 21, followed the next evening by the sparkling Pascale Picard Band and, February 23, Latino-québécois beatboy Boogat. The 2nd course presents Nicolas Pellerin et les Grands Hurleurs (February 27) in a very foot-tappingly trad party, legendary Montreal indie-rock group GrimSkunk (February 28), the very cool Qualité Motel (March 1) and, last but not least, another of our finest gems, David Usher in the festival closer… and Nuit blanche opener! To amp up the ambience, don’t forget that VJ Cafrine (returning this year) and VJ Yanneek add their vibrant visuals to enhance the musical performances on every evening shows are held. Finally the RBC Stage welcomes dance fanatics to tango demonstrations and workshops hosted by dance school Las Piernas Tango, at 5:30 p.m. (February 21 to 23 and February 27 to March 2).

The Milk Family Fun Zone and the big Urban Slide

The Milk Family Fun Zone offers activities sure to please the widest range of winter warriors: start with the gigantic Urban Slide, of course—110 metres of crazy zooming fun, with wild sound effects and multicoloured lights!—but don’t forget the giant parlour games, the Photo Studio, a contest with instant prizes, and of course the delights of the Milk bar. Young or old, child or teen or adult, with family or friends, you’ll find it all in this perfect rendezvous point!

A magnificent site

Last year, the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE outdoor site returned to the site of its birth, the downtown core. And it was only too obvious how perfectly its new home suited the fest! Admirably located in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles—making it remarkably accessible to all Montrealers and tourists—the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE outdoor site now contributes more than ever to downtown entertainment and the cultural, gastronomic and economic redynamization of Montreal life. And how! Only one edition was required to illustrate how completely and comprehensively the event enlivened and beautified the city through 11 days and nights of festivities: illuminating streets and buildings, projections, colorful décor, etc. Fans will be happy to learn that the tandem responsible for last year’s magnificent progressive architectural lighting, Marc Tétreault and Jean Laurin, returns this year with a movement-based interpretation of the site, on the theme of “a dynamic environment”, a progressive luminous concept that mutates—sometimes randomly, sometimes on purpose, always intended to enhance everyone’s winter experience.

Now more than ever, the festival site offers everything you need for a winter party—even right after work. A 5 à 7 Happy Hour? A snack, or a full meal? Absolutely! Quench your thirst at the RBC Dome (after 9 p.m.), the Balmoral, SAQ sales points, the Milk Dairy Bar, Rickard’s bar, the Porto Cabral kiosk, the Amarula bar or Café Jura. There’s an abundance of choices for your dining pleasure with the Gourmet Pit-stops and, as ever, excellent sausages made expressly for the festival and grillin’ marshmallows at the Sun Life Financial Braziers, but also churros with delectable dulce de leche! On weekends, by the way, don’t forget to gather ’round these braziers to create lovely souvenirs thanks to the squad behind the Sun Life Financial Big Family Photo.

The return of the Festival of Quebec Cheeses

Finally, we’re absolutely delighted to announce the return of the Festival of Quebec Cheeses, from Wednesday, February 20 to Saturday, February 23 on the Grande-Place in Complexe Desjardins, after missing last year’s festival due to renovations then underway in Complexe Desjardins. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet Quebec cheesemakers, whose diverse array of exceptional products never ceases to impress. To add to the pleasure, you can also discover different wines, ciders and beers on the site.

Opening hours of the Free Outdoor Site

February 21 to March 3 (except Monday and Tuesday): 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday: noon to 11 p.m. (Nuit blanche, March 2: noon to 3 a.m.)

Beyond the site, you’ll also find the Tuques bleues, a nocturnal snowshoe adventure on Mount Royal, the annual benefit event hosted by Amis de la montagne, now in its 16th edition, scheduled for Thursday, February 21 at 5:45 p.m. It’s a festive outdoor activity that contributes to the conservation of Mount Royal. 10th Glenn Gould Prize goes to Robert Lepage

Innovative playwright, actor and director of theatre, opera, circus and film, Robert Lepage is the Tenth Glenn Gould Prize Laureate. Mr. Lepage has won international critical acclaim and audience applause for his groundbreaking and influential works that fuse diverse media into cohesive stories that surprise, challenge and delight.

"I would like to congratulate our jury on an inspired selection," said Brian Levine, Executive Director of The Glenn Gould Foundation. "Robert Lepage is an artist whose dreams have expanded the realm of possibility and whose work transcends all boundaries. His work illuminates the human condition in that same sprit of innovation and idealism that motivated Glenn Gould. We feel his selection as Laureate marks a new milestone in the history of The Glenn Gould Prize and The Glenn Gould Foundation."

"It is a good thing to celebrate excellence but I do think it is important to define what "excellence" is. For me, the excellence of an artist should not be measured only by his successes and achievements but also by his courage and capacity to constantly put himself in danger," stated Robert Lepage. "Trial, error and at times even public humiliation are as much part of the process of defining one's uniqueness. It means surviving both the highs of being ahead of the curve and the defeated feeling of trailing behind."

"I am deeply honoured by this prestigious and generous accolade. As I know Glenn Gould did, I believe there is such a thing as a culture of the North and as I was walking to work this morning trying to fight my way through the heavy blizzard that had invaded my fair city, I could somewhat sense his presence in the howling wind and the vanishing footsteps I was clumsily following in the snow," said Robert Lepage.

In reaching their decision, the jurors took special note of Mr. Lepage's increasing influence in the theatre world, which has reinforced his willingness to take risks on stage to achieve results often thought to be unobtainable.

Mr. Lepage has directed productions at the Metropolitan Opera as well as for opera houses in Japan, France, England, Spain and Canada. His productions are mostly staged by his Quebec company Ex-Machina, and seen throughout the world, including Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour and Cirque du Soleil productions including TOTEM and Kà, which has played to more than six million people. Equally at home in an intimate setting, his one-person plays are always initiated and initially performed by Lepage himself, including The Andersen Project, which Lepage performed in more than ten countries.

Glenn Gould Prize Chair, Paul Hoffert notes, "Lepage is a rare contemporary artist who has continued to innovate and take risks while retaining his audiences. His influence in film, theatre and music is immense and global. Like Glenn Gould, he has transformed his field, drawn new audiences to classical music, and embraced technology in the service of his art."

Robert Lepage was chosen from a distinguished list of international candidates nominated by the general public and will receive $50,000 (CAD) and the Glenn Gould Prize statue by Canadian artist Ruth Abernethy. Mr. Lepage will choose an outstanding young artist to receive The City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize of $15,000 (CAD), an individual who embodies the qualities of creative promise, innovation and career potential demonstrated by Gould in his youth. Mr. Lepage and his protégé will receive their awards at a gala ceremony in Toronto and their work will be honoured through a series of public events presented later in the year.

The Tenth Glenn Gould Prize Jury included legendary music and entertainment producer Bob Ezrin (Canada/USA), screenwriter and director Deepa Mehta (Canada); award-winning author and essayist John Ralston Saul (Canada) singer-songwriter, poet and artist Patti Smith (United States); entrepreneur, arts philanthropist and longtime advisor to the London Symphony Orchestra Sir David Tang (Hong Kong); and one of opera's leading tenors Rolando Villazón (Mexico/France).

About Robert Lepage
Robert Lepage is renowned for his creative and original approach to theatre and opera, using new technologies to shake classical stage direction to its foundations. The Quebec-born artist began his career as an actor, author and director gaining international recognition early on with The Dragons' Trilogy in 1985, quickly followed by Vinci, Polygraph and Tectonic Plates. In 1994 he founded Ex Machina, his multidisciplinary production company, and under his artistic direction, this new team produced a steady output of plays including The Seven Streams of the River Ota, Geometry of Miracles, The Far Side of The Moon, The Andersen Project and Lipsynch.

His operatic achievements include thrilling productions of the double-bill of Bluebeard's Castle and Erwartung, The Damnation of Faust, 1984, The Rake's Progress, Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Metropolitan Opera, The Nightingale and Other Short Fables with the Canadian Opera Company, and The Tempest. He has worked with leading opera producers in France, Spain and Japan.

About The Glenn Gould Prize
An international symbol of creative excellence, The Glenn Gould Prize - which has been referred to as "The Nobel Prize of the Arts" - is awarded biennially to a living individual for a unique lifetime contribution that has enriched the human condition through the arts. A tribute to Glenn Gould's artistry and his multifaceted contributions to culture, the prize promotes the vital connection between artistic excellence and the transformation of lives.

The Glenn Gould Foundation honours Glenn Gould's spirit and legacy by celebrating brilliance, promoting creativity and transforming lives through the power of music and the arts with the Foundation's signature activities, including The Glenn Gould Prize. Past laureates include Leonard Cohen (2011), Dr. José Antonio Abreu (2008) founder of El Sistema, Pierre Boulez (2002), Yo-Yo Ma (1999), Oscar Peterson (1993) and Lord Yehudi Menuhin (1990).
