Crankytown, an interactive site about periods that features videos, stories and poems from artists such as Feist, Emma Thompson, Jessica Paré and Karine Vanasse, has expanded to include Crankyfest– an online contest for videos about periods. The project was created by Canadian actors Liane Balaban and Vanessa Matsui, and costume designer Jenna Wright, who have partnered with iThentic, Playback’s Digital Company of the Year. The contest launches on January 17th with a submission deadline of March 1, 2013.

“It’s an exciting time for women in the world right now – and Crankyfest is part of the wave of men and women saying ‘enough.’ Enough objectification. Enough violence. Enough of this limited portrayal of the female experience in massmedia. Women are people, and they have stories. And there happen to be a ton of incredible ones about periods. Now with Crankytown and Crankyfest, there is a designated place to share those experiences, and your vision as a filmmaker,” said Liane Balaban.

Crankyfest’s international jury is comprised of industry experts Meaghan Rath (Being Human), Jane Grenier (Conde Nast/Teen Vogue) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight). There are both jury and audience awards, which include a prize pack filled with filmmaking tools and a weekender bag from Everlane.com. The launch event for Crankyfest will feature a live auction of an Everlane backpack with proceeds going to Huru International, a charity that provides sanitary pads to at-risk-girls in Kenya. Crankytown will also premiere four celeb first period stories, including Jessica Paré (Mad Men) and Ryan Cartwright, (Alphas, Mad Men).

“Think about it. Period stories are a no-brainer: There’s blood, there’s surprise, there’s drama. And more often than not, a whole lot of comedy,” said Vanessa Matsui.

Applicable films can be from any genre, must be three minutes or less in length, and must take periods as their subject matter. Crankytown’s own videos serve as inspiration (playlist below).

The Lindalee Tracey Award 2013 is now open for submissions.

For Emerging Canadian Filmmakers Working in the Spirit of Lindalee Tracey, whose films reflected:

- a passionate point of view
- a strong sense of social justice
- a joie de vivre

We are now welcoming submissions for this year’s award!

The deadline to submit entries is March 8, 2013.

Printable Award One Sheet

About Lindalee:
Lindalee Tracey was an award-winning filmmaker, author, entertainer and also a beloved wife and mother. Through her extensive body of work and indefatigable personality, Lindalee brought great joy to the world. She was passionate about bringing issues of social justice into her work, and championed people who are often ignored, underestimated or forgotten. Equally, she celebrated those who rise above disadvantage.

Lindalee passed away on October 19, 2006, at age 49, after a five-year battle with breast cancer. At the time of her passing, Lindalee’s family, friends and admirers created this award in her honour.

The Award:
The Lindalee Tracey Award is presented annually at the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival, held in Toronto each spring. In 2007, the first Lindalee Tracey Award was presented to Trevor Anderson for his film Rock Pockets. After receiving the award, Trevor has gone on to make eight more short films. His short; The High Level Bridge was selected to screen at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, and over 40 other festivals worldwide, proving the impact the endowment can make.

Says Anderson, “The Lindalee Tracey award has helped me to take myself seriously as a professional filmmaker. I had been slogging away on my own in the Prairies and I now feel like I have a community and support within the industry.”

Other winners include the short drama Forgotten, by Ayanie Mohamed, which received kudos from fellow Somali-Canadian K’Naan who sent his congratulations from across the globe via email. The 2011 winner was Quebec filmmaker Alexandre Hamel for his work Clé 56, which gave us a quick look inside a Montreal psychiatric hospital.

Last year’s winner was Jasmine Oore from Nova Scotia with her film entitled, Glamour Guts, a short instructional film on how to live glamourously with intestinal disease.

The 2013 award winner will be announced at the Hot Docs awards night on Friday, May 3rd, 2013. The winner will be awarded $5,000 in cash from the Lindalee Tracey Fund, $5,000 in post-production services from Technicolor and a beautiful hand-blown glass sculpture by Andrew Kuntz, specially commissioned to honour Lindalee.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for the Lindalee Tracey Award, you must be an emerging artist. We define emerging artist as an individual who has less than three years of training or experience in media arts, which can be formal (university or college studies) or informal (production courses, workshops, hands-on experience in production, etc.). The emerging artist must also have completed at least one independent film or video, excluding school film projects.

Submission Process:
Your submissions for the award should include 6 copies of ALL below mentioned items…

- A DVD of up to two films or TV productions, any length, any genre, completed or as a work-in-progress, which may or may not have been publicly screened or broadcast, but was not a school film project. The filmmaker must have had final creative control.
- A write-up of your relevant background as a filmmaker
- A brief explanation of why you made the film(s)

Please ensure you have back-up copies of your work. We regret that DVDs will not be returned.

We look forward to receiving your submissions. A jury of experienced filmmakers and writers who worked with Lindalee, including last year’s recipient of the Lindalee Tracey Award, will select this year’s winner.

Please forward your submission to:

2013 AVN Awards – winners

$

0

The 5th Adult Entertainment Expo at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas concluded on Saturday night with the presentation of the 2013 AVN Awards.

Elegant Angel Productions, which swept many of the major categories for a total of 27 awards, seven of which recognized the artistry of Graham Travis' Wasteland. Fresh from scoring multiple awards in 2012 for his equally intense Portrait of a Call Girl, Travis once again took home the trophies for Best Director - Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Editing, while its star, Lily Carter, snagged this year's Best Actress award. The movie's cinematography also won an award, and the movie itself was feted with both Best Drama and AVN's second Movie of the Year prize.

Close behind Wasteland in award popularity was Axel Braun's brilliantly comedic Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody, distributed by Vivid Entertainment Group. Braun himself scored the Best Director - Parody and, with Mark Logan, Best Screenplay - Parody awards; Tom Byron was recognized for his outstanding role as Jedi knight Obi-Wan Kenobi; and the movie itself was voted Best Parody - Comedy, Best Art Direction (thanks in no small part to the realistic "land-speeder" built by Kylie Ireland and Andy Appleton), and Best Overall Marketing Campaign - Individual Project. And besides sharing those Star Wars XXX kudos with Braun, Vivid's new series Brand New Faces took home three awards: Best Pro-Am Release, Best Pro-Am Series and Best Specialty Release - Other Genre.

The show included a performance from Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity, and the audience cheered and applauded wildly as the woman humped herself on the ropes.

Tonight in the first pavilion of Mosfilm, the Национальной академии кинематографических искусств и наук России (National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Russia) held their awards ceremony for the 11th annual премию Золотой орел (Golden Eagle Awards).

Coming out on top was Белый тигр (White Tiger) by Карен Шахназаров (Karen Shahnazarov). It won for Best Picture, as well as Music, Editing and Sound. Set in World War II, the action film is about a Red Army Sergeant who becomes obsessed with destroying a German white Tiger tank. It was Russia's submission to the Academy for the Foreign Language Film Award but was not shortlisted.

Орда (The Horde) by Андрей Прошкин (Andrei Proshkin) had led the nominations and came away with five awards. The historical epic won for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design.

No other films captured more than a single trophy. The Best Actor winner was Данила Козловский (Danila Kozlovskiy) for ДухLess (Soulless). Анна Михалкова (Anna Mikhalkova) took Best Actress for Любовь с акцентом (Love with an Accent).

The winner for Best Foreign Film was last year's Oscar-winning film The Artist.
