The six exceptions are as follows:

1972: Francis Ford Coppola received the DGA's nod for The Godfather while the Academy selected Bob Fosse for Cabaret.
1985: Steven Spielberg received his first DGA Award for The Color Purple while the Oscar® went to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa.

Australian Academy (AACTA) International Awards – nominees

$

The Australian Academy has announced the nominees in the five AACTA International Award categories, recognising international achievements in film as follows: Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress.

Nominees include international screen luminaries such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington and Marion Cotillard, through to Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee.

Australian actors Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables), Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Nicole Kidman (The Paperboy) have also been nominated, and Australian writer-director Ben Lewin has been nominated for Best Direction for The Sessions.

Of the six films competing for the 2nd AACTA International Award for Best Film, Silver Linings Playbook leads with five nominations across each of the five categories. Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty each received four nominations, while Argo has been recognised with three nominations. Les Misérables and Life of Pi each have two nominations.

Speaking of the 2nd AACTA International Awards, AACTA President Geoffrey Rush said:

"In this, the second year of the AACTA International Awards, we're delighted to build on the huge success of our inaugural event held in LA in January 2012. This year's nominees include actors, directors and screenwriters who truly represent international excellence – from French actresses Marion Cotillard and Emmanuelle Riva, to Taiwanese director Ang Lee, and from British actor Daniel Day-Lewis, to US icons Joaquin Phoenix, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino.

"As the Australian Academy engages in the international Awards conversation, it's brilliant to see Australian performers and practitioners nominated alongside international talent for the 2nd AACTA International Awards. Indeed, the talents of Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Ben Lewin stand on their own and will no doubt be honoured by our international screen peers.

"We look forward with great anticipation to the announcement of the winners of the AACTA International Awards in late January in L.A., the epicentre of international film."

AFI | AACTA CEO, Damian Trewhella, said that it was also gratifying to see the talents of so many Australian performers in the nominated international productions – Russell Crowe in Les Misérables, Jacki Weaver in Silver Linings Playbook, and Joel Edgerton in Zero Dark Thirty.

Trewhella said that with a burgeoning industry and with Australian performers and practitioners consistently acknowledged as among the world's best by other international screen organisations such as AMPAS and BAFTA, it was important that the Australian screen industry could equally recognise the talents of their international peers through the Australian Academy's International Awards.

"The Australian Academy's International Awards are dedicated to identifying and awarding the pinnacle of screen excellence and success regardless of geography. Last year's inaugural AACTA International Awards presaged the huge Academy Awards success of The Artist as well as Meryl Streep's win for her performance in The Iron Lady, and we wait with anticipation to see if there are such synergies between Australian jurors and their international counterparts in this year's Awards season."

The 2nd AACTA International Awards winners' announcement event will be held in L.A., late January 2013.

TFCA’s Best Canadian Film Award goes to Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell

TORONTO – Stories We Tell, Sarah Polley’s documentary inquiry into her tangled family history, has won the Toronto Film Critics Association’s 2012 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award.

The award was presented to Polley by noted writer/actor/director Don McKellar, a previous TFCA winner, at a gala dinner held January 8 at the historic Carlu in downtown Toronto. Also nominated for the award were Bestiaire, directed by Denis Côté, and Goon, directed by Michael Dowse. In attendance were prominent members of the film industry including Robert Lantos, Darren Throop, Hussain Amarshi and luminaries such as Minister Michael Chan, Rick Mercer, Patricia Rozema, Jian Ghomeshi, Bruce McDonald, Mark McKinney, Sarah Gadon, Emily Hampshire and Katie Boland.

The $100,000 value of the newly endowed Rogers Best Canadian Film Award makes it by far the richest arts prize in Canada. As runners-up, Côté and Dowse each received $5,000 from Rogers Communications.

This marks the second time the TFCA has honoured Polley for Best Canadian Film; she won for her first feature, Away From Her (2006). Stories We Tell also received the TFCA’s 2012 Allan King Documentary Award, which was presented to Polley by CBC personality Rick Mercer.

“This unprecedented prize throws an invaluable spotlight on Canadian film,” said TFCA President Brian D. Johnson, film critic for Maclean’s. “In a world where most cash arts prizes are voted by small juries of peers, it puts faith in a diverse group of fiercely independent critics. This year we had three strong, very different nominees—Denis Côté’s documentary meditation on captive animals; Michael Dowse’s wildly profane yet tender hockey comedy; and Sarah Polley’s genre-bending family memoir. We congratulate all three of them.”

“With this deeply personal film, Sarah Polley has offered up a thoroughly engaging and interesting depiction of her own family and its stories.” added Phil Lind, Vice Chairman, Rogers Communications Inc. “She is at the forefront of Canadian filmmakers and we're thrilled to recognize this achievement with this prize. As long time supporters of the Canadian production sector, Rogers is proud to support these Canadian stories and the Canadian story tellers who bring them to life.”

Veteran Toronto filmmaker Bruce McDonald presented the 2012 Manulife Financial Best Student Film Award to Ryerson University student Andrew Moir for his short documentary Just As I Remember, which juxtaposes the experience of two men with ALS—a father of three in the early stages of disease and his own dad who is almost completely paralyzed. The award carries a cash prize of $5,000, donated by Manulife Financial to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that is at the heart of every student film.

Noted writer-director Patricia Rozema presented the TFCA’s Jay Scott Prize for an emerging artist to Toronto filmmaker Nicolás Pereda (Greatest Hits). Sponsored by Deluxe, the prize is accompanied by a $5,000 cash award and $5,000 in post production services. It’s named after the late, legendary Globe and Mail film critic Jay Scott.

Pereda’s thriftily produced and formally experimental films have been embraced at festivals around the world. This Mexican-born graduate of York University, who lives in Toronto, won a prize at Venice in 2010 for his lyrical drama Summer of Goliath. With six features under his belt at 32, he has already received a full retrospective at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

“After watching a film,” said Johnson, “those of us who knew Jay Scott occasionally still find ourselves thinking, ‘What would Jay think?’ Jay loved to champion bold, experimental filmmakers with a lyrical eye—I could imagine him discovering Nicolás Pereda and trying to make him famous.”

The TFCA is extremely grateful to founding sponsor, Rogers Communications Inc, and to its other sponsors: Manulife Financial, Cineplex Media, Deluxe, Shangri-la Hotel, Maclean’s magazine, the Globe and Mail, Moet & Chandon, Ontario Media Development Corporation, Cineplex Entertainment, North 44, MacLaren McGill and the Carlu.

This morning the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the nominations for the 16th Annual EE British Academy Film Awards. The announcement was made by British actors Jeremy Irvine and Alice Eves.

Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the field with 10 nominations including Best Film. Yet surprisingly, Spielberg himself was not nominated for Best Director. Also missing the Director slot was British director Tom Hooper whose Les Misérables was in second place with 9 nominations, tied with Life of Pi. Both Spielberg and Hooper made the DGA Awards nominations list but were replaced at BAFTA by Michael Haneke and Quentin Tarantino. However, the Best Film nominees lined up with the DGA nominees.

The James Bond film Skyfall picked up 8 nominations, while Ben Affleck's Argo followed with seven and Joe Wright's Anna Karenina took six.

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 10 at London's Royal Opera House.

American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Awards – nominations

$

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has just announced the nominations for film for the 27th Annual ASC Awards.

Selecting along the same lines as BAFTA just a few hours ago, the ASC chose to nominated Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC, for Anna Karenina, Danny Cohen, BSC, for Les Misérables, Claudio Miranda, ASC, for Life of Pi, Janusz Kaminski for Lincoln, and Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, for Skyfall.

Contending films that did not manage a mention include Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, Tarantino's Django Unchained and Ben Affleck's Argo. Detractors of Les Misérables who complained incessantly about Hooper's DGA nomination will no doubt not be pleased with its ASC nomination for Danny Cohen. Many people seem to have objected to the unique filmmaking style and assumed (wrongly) that the approach was haphazard and shoddy, rather than artistic and groundbreaking in allowing an exceptional level of acting in a musical never before seen.

“The films our members have nominated are visually distinctive, and very diverse: a theatrical epic, a grand musical, an imaginative 3-D fable, a sweeping biographical drama, and a stylish spy thriller,” notes ASC President Stephen Lighthill. “What they all have in common is that each project’s cinematographer contributed captivating visuals that enhanced and elevated the storytelling.”

This year’s nod brings Deakins’ total to 11. He won ASC Awards for The Shawshank Redemption (1995) and The Man Who Wasn’t There (2002). His other nominations were for Fargo (1997), Kundun (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2001), No Country for Old Men (2008), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2008), Revolutionary Road (2009), The Reader (2009) and True Grit (2011). He was also the recipient of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

This is Kaminski’s fifth nomination. His prior nominations were for Schindler’s List (1994), Amistad (1998), Saving Private Ryan (1999) and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2008).

Cohen, McGarvey and Miranda have all been recognized once previously – Cohen for The King’s Speech (2011); McGarvey for Atonement (2008); and Miranda for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009).

Previously announced special awards will go to Dean Semler ASC, ACS, who will receive the 2012 ASC Lifetime Achievement Award; Rodney Charters, ASC, CSC, who will get the Career Achievement in Television Award; Robby Müller, NSC, BVK, who will be presented with the International Achievement Award; and Curtis Clark, ASC, who will receive the President’s Award.

The winners of the 27th Annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography will be announced on February 10, 2013, at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom.

2013 GALECA Dorian Awards – nominations

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA) has announced the nominations for their 4th annual Dorian Awards.

Leading the field with four nominations was Tom Hooper's Les Misérables with four nominations. It received nods for Film of the Year, Actor (Hugh Jackman), Actress (Anne Hathaway) and Visually Striking Film of the Year. Many people have been highly critical of the Hooper's unusual visual approach in the film. But there is no doubt that the look is striking, and I feel it is artistically appropriate.

2013 Cinema Eye Honors – winners

The gala for the 6th Annual Cinema Eye Honors took place tonight at New York City’s Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.

The top prize of Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking went to 5 Broken Cameras by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi. The film portrays a first-hand account of the situation in Palestine when the village of Bil’in takes up nonviolent resistance after the Israeli army encroached upon its land to make room for Jewish colonists. That was the film's only prize, however, and it looked like it would be going home empty-handed until the final award was announced.

Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady's Detropia was the only multiple award-winner. It won for Outstanding Achievement in Direction, and for Original Music.

The Cinema Eye Honors were founded in 2007 to recognize excellence in artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking. It remains the only international nonfiction award to recognize the whole creative team, presenting annual craft awards in directing, producing, cinematography, editing, composing and graphic design/animation.

46 films have been selected by the Deutschen Filmakademie (German Film Academy) for the longlist of films eligible for nomination in the upcoming 63rd Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Awards) or Lolas.

Selected films included the English-language film Cloud Atlas by Lana Wachowski, Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer (who is German). Also included for eligibility is the German-language film Lore by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland. It was Australia's submission to the Academy for Best Foreign Language Film but was not selected.

The German film Barbara by Christian Petzold which was shortlisted by the Academy was from last year's 62nd Deutscher Filmpreis. Although current Oscar-nominee Amour is a German co-production (with Austria and France), it was not included on the longlist.

They were chosen by three committees – and eighteen-member committee for drama, seven for documentary, and eight for children's film. 28 of the jurors were Filmakademie members, while one was an industry professional and four were representatives of the Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (Government Commission for Culture and Media).

The nominations will be announced on March 22, 2013. The ceremony for the 63rd Deutschen Filmpreis will be presented on the evening of April 26 in Berlin’s Friedrichstadt-Palast.
