The Société des Réalisateurs de Films (Film Directors' Guild) has announced the films for their 45th Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight), the last of the Cannes Festival sidebars.

17 of the 21 films that will screen are world premieres. Unfortunately, none of the selections are from Canadian filmmakers. Women are underrepresented as usual, though not as badly as in the official selection. Among the women directors is Belgian actress Yolande Moreau from the cast of last year's closing film Camille redoubles (Camille Rewinds). She presents her directorial debut Henri.

The 45th Quinzaine des Réalisateurs takes place May 16–26, 2013, starting one day after the launch of the Festival de Cannes.

2013 Golden Trailer Awards – winners

It was a big night for The Walt Disney Studios at the 14th Annual Golden Trailer Awards at the Saban Theatre on Friday night. The preview for Iron Man 3 took two awards, Best Summer Blockbuster and the top prize, Best In Show. The Wreck It Ralph trailer nabbed Best Animation/Family, Monsters University had the Most Original Trailer, and as a capper, Disney studio marketers were given the first-ever Top Of The Box Office award for their campaign on 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers. The studio got two additional offstage nods for Best Animation/Family TV Spot on Monsters University and Most Original Spot for Brave.

Between volleys of jokes by headliner Rob Schneider host Aisha Tyler, 18 of 67 total awards were handed out. Justin Chon of the Twilight movies presented, as did Lake Bell, writer, director and star of In A World…, a critically acclaimed new comedy which has its dramatic climax at a Golden Trailer Awards ceremony.

Among other kudos, the Skyfall promo took Best Action, and Best Documentary went to the Brooklyn Castle trailer, and Best Video Game went to the Tomb Raider preview. The 18 show awards are listed below. The full list, which includes the best of the year in TV Spots, posters, foreign trailers, festival trailers and more, can be found on the Golden Trailer website.

The heroes of the GTA show are trailer cutters— the people whose artistry has turned movie ads into wildly popular entertainment, generating over 5 billion streams a year. Stand-out agencies at last night’s event were Trailer Park, for the Iron Man 3 and Monsters University trailers, and Buddha Jones, which won trophies for Best Independent Trailer for Silver Linings Playbook, Best Horror for Mama, and the coveted Golden Fleece Award—best trailer for a bad movie—for Hit and Run.

Evelyn Brady-Watters reflected, “It’s thrilling when innovative trailers for small dramas or docs win Best In Show, but this year, the blockbusters really show off the power of a great, creative trailer. The Iron Man 3 preview is a world-wide phenomenon, and last year’s two-time nominee for Marvel’s The Avengers anchored a campaign that earned $1.5 billion and our new Top of the Box Office award.”

Monica Brady, Executive Producer of the GTA, added “This year we’re seeing such well-crafted material, with great sound design. At the theater the other night, the audience was actually clapping for the trailers – they’re really gearing people up for this summer season.”

Founded in 1999, the Golden Trailer Awards are the world’s top honors for Movie Previews and Marketing. The 2013 jury comprised: Bill Block, Producer and CEO of QED International (District 9); Brian Cavanaugh-Jones, Producer/President, Automatik Entertainment (Safe); Daniel Diamond, President of QED International (You Got Served); Andrew Dunn, Cinematographer (The Perks of Being a Wallflower); Drew Goddard, Writer/Director (Cabin in the Woods); Angelique Higgins, Producer and Partner in Launchpad Productions; Andrew Panay, Producer and CEO of Panay Films (Hit and Run); David Paterson, Producer (Bridge to Terabithia); Nicholas Stoller, Writer/Director (5 Year Engagement); and Lee David Zlotoff, Writer/Producer (MacGyver).

HOT DOCS WRAPS 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH RECORD-BREAKING AUDIENCES OF 180,000
MUSCLE SHOALS NAMED AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER AND
THE MACHINE WHICH MAKES EVERYTHING DISAPPEAR AND THESE BIRDS WALK TIE FOR FILMMAKERS AWARD

Toronto, May 6, 2013 – Hot Docs has wrapped its 20th anniversary edition with record-breaking audience numbers reaching an estimated 180,000. The 11-day event featured 418 public screenings—
157 of which went rush—of 204 films on 16 screens across Toronto, an internationally renowned conference and market for documentary professionals, and Docs for Schools, a phenomenally popular education program for youth. New this year, Hot Docs presented the Scotiabank Big Ideas series, featuring live onstage discussions with documentary subjects Anita Hill, Roméo Dallaire, Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss, and celebrated its 20th anniversary with a free outdoor screening to thank its loyal audiences. The Festival welcomed 180 guest filmmakers and 55 guest subjects from across Canada and around the world to present their films and take part in special post-screening Q&A sessions with audiences. Official film selections were chosen from a total of 2386 films submitted to the Festival.

“'Toronto has become a world capital for cinema lovers, and feeding their appetite for 20 years has been great fun,” says Chris McDonald, Hot Docs executive director. “We are very proud of our smart and savvy audience, as well as those razor sharp filmmakers who join us each year.”

After the final screening yesterday, audience votes were tallied for the Audience Award, presented by Netflix. The winner is MUSCLE SHOALS (D: Greg “Freddy” Camalier, USA), the story of a tiny backwater Alabama town’s impact on popular music. Second in the audience poll is BLOOD BROTHER (D: Steve Hoover, USA), in which the director follows his friend’s sudden move to India to care for HIV-positive orphans; and third in the audience poll is A WHOLE LOTT MORE (D: Victor Buhler, UK), which looks at the impact of the auto crisis on a company whose 1200 employees have developmental disabilities. The cash prize for the Audience Award, which will be shared by the top three films in the audience poll, was crowd-funded from audiences through Hot Docs’ Doc Ignite platform. Currently in excess of $6300, the public can further contribute to this cash prize until Friday, May 10.

The top ten audience favourites as determined by audience vote are:

1. MUSCLE SHOALS (D: Greg “Freddy” Camalier, USA)
2. BLOOD BROTHER (D: Steve Hoover, USA)
3. A WHOLE LOTT MORE (D: Victor Buhler, UK)
4. THE PUNK SINGER (D: Sini Anderson, USA)
5. LAST WOMAN STANDING (D: Lorraine Price, Juliet Lammers; Canada)
6. SPRING & ARNAUD (D: Katherine Knight, Marcia Connolly; Canada)
7. THIS AIN'T NO MOUSE MUSIC! (D: Chris Simon, Maureen Gosling, USA)
8. MENSTRUAL MAN (D: Amit Virmani, Singapore, India)
9. THE CRASH REEL (D: Lucy Walker, USA)
10. THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE (D: Liz Marshall, Canada)

Also during this year’s Hot Docs Festival, attending filmmakers with official selections in the Festival were invited to vote for their favourite film. This year two films tied for the Filmmakers Award: THE MACHINE WHICH MAKES EVERYTHING DISAPPEAR (D: Tinatin Gurchiani; Georgia, Germany), which looks at the lives Georgian youth through a casting call, and THESE BIRDS WALK (D: Bassam Tariq, Omar Mullick; USA), which looks at a children’s shelter in Karachi.

A full week of industry programming was attended by 2514 delegates from around the world. Hot Docs mounted a roster of three workshops, 12 conference sessions, 18 networking events and parties, three Kickstart panels for emerging filmmakers, 12 micro meetings, 14 new Close Up With… sessions with broadcasters, two new Rent-an-Expert sessions, the Doc Summit, International Co-Production Day panels, and the Hot Docs Awards Presentation. Hot Docs also hosted eight official delegations from China, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, the Nordic Region, Poland, South Africa and the USA.

The Hot Docs Forum, Hot Docs’ key international co-financing market event, Hot Docs Deal Maker, Hot Docs’ new one-on-one curated pitch event, and Distribution Rendezvous, Hot Docs’ tailored meeting service for completed films seeking distribution, saw brisk pitching, networking and deal-making. In total, 20 projects representing 12 countries were presented to a panel of over 180 key commissioning editors and funders at the Hot Docs Forum. A total of 55 projects were pitched at approximately 400 meetings during Hot Docs Deal Maker, and Distribution Rendezvous facilitated approximately 530 meetings.

Doc for Schools, Hot Docs’ education program that runs during the Festival and offers free in-theatre and in-school screenings of select Festival films, reached a record number of students in 2013. Close to 78,000 students participated in the program, including schools in Toronto and throughout Ontario.

Hot Docs (www.hotdocs.ca), North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market, presented its 20th annual edition from April 25 – May 5, 2013. An outstanding selection of 204 documentaries from Canada and around the world were presented to Toronto audiences and international delegates. Hot Docs also mounted a full roster of conference sessions and market events and services for documentary practitioners, including the renowned Hot Docs Forum, Hot Docs Deal Maker and The Doc Shop. In partnership with Blue Ice Group, Hot Docs operates the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, a century-old landmark located in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood.

TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX CELEBRATES A CENTURY OF CHINESE CINEMA WITH UNPRECEDENTED FILM SERIES, EXHIBITIONS AND SPECIAL GUESTS
- Programme features 80 films, free exhibitions and guests including Chen Kaige, Johnnie To and Jackie Chan -
- Tickets on sale May 21 at 10 a.m. for TIFF Members, May 27 at 10 a.m. for non-members -

Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, announced today details for a comprehensive exploration of Chinese film, art and culture. A Century of Chinese Cinema features a major film retrospective of over 80 titles, sessions with some of the biggest names in Chinese cinema, and a free exhibition featuring two internationally acclaimed visual artists. The flagship programme of the summer season, A Century of Chinese Cinema runs from June 5 to August 11, 2013.

"A Century of Chinese Cinema exemplifies TIFF's vision to foster new relationships and build bridges of cultural exchange," said Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF. "If we are, indeed, living in the Chinese Century, it is essential that we attempt to understand what that entails. There is no better way to do so than through film, which encourages cross-cultural understanding in our city and beyond."

"The history, legacy and trajectory of Chinese film has been underrepresented in the global cinematic story, and as a leader in creative and cultural discovery through film, TIFF Bell Lightbox is the perfect setting for A Century of Chinese Cinema," said Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox. "With Chinese cinema in the international spotlight, an examination of the history and development of the region's amazing artistic output is long overdue. The unprecedented scale and depth of this programme should help make up for that lost time."

Cinephiles and Sinophiles alike will find much to dig into over the course of A Century of Chinese Cinema. The programme is the result of an unprecedented partnership with the China Film Archive, the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Chinese Taipei Film Archive. The films, many of which are new prints, digital restorations or archival 35mm prints - and several of which have never before been seen in North America - trace the shared cultural and historical connections between the cinemas of the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and offer a range cinematic options for all tastes. From classics of the silent era (Laborer's Love, Red Heroine) to the Golden Age (The Goddess, Spring In A Small Town); post-1949 content (Unfinished Comedy, The Winter) to the rise of genre films (A Better Tomorrow, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin); new post-Cultural Revolution voices (Red Sorghum, Boat People) as well as contemporary masters (In the Mood for Love; Still Life).

A Century Of Chinese Cinema is not only a film programme. TIFF’s continued championing of the visual arts marks yet another milestone with a major new commission by the acclaimed visual artist Yang Fudong, presented with two new installations by leading cinematographer Christopher Doyle. Admission to the exhibition is free. Yang Fudong's debut feature film, An Estranged Paradise, will also be screened as part of the TIFF Cinematheque Free Screen series and Christopher Doyle will present a special performance as part of the show's opening weekend. Please see accompanying press release for more details.

A veritable who's who of Chinese cinema will descend on TIFF Bell Lightbox over the course of the series, starting with the Opening Night festivities on June 6 when renowned director Chen Kaige introduces his Palme d'Or-winning masterpiece, Farewell My Concubine. Chen will also introduce his landmark debut, Yellow Earth, as well as take part in our In Conversation With… programme to discuss his filmmaking career. Jackie Chan returns to Toronto to share - and introduce - works from his past (Drunken Master I and The Legend of Drunken Master, Police Story) and future (a preview of the upcoming Police Story 2013). Cinematographer Christopher Doyle introduces the beloved Chungking Express as well as Comrades: Almost a Love Story; producer-director Johnnie To walks audiences through his action-packed career for an In Conversation With… appearance, and introduces his films Election and Election II; and Nansun Shi, one of Asia's most respected producers, shares her industry experience and her thoughts on two much-loved genre films A Better Tomorrow and A Chinese Ghost Story. Distinguished scholar David Bordwell discusses martial arts film, and actresses Nora Miao and Ivy Ling Po introduce, respectively, Fist of Fury and The Love Eterne, films in which they starred. TIFF's own Noah Cowan will introduce Spring in a Small Town, often cited as the greatest Chinese film ever made.

FILM PROGRAMME AND GUEST HIGHLIGHTS

The Century of Chinese Cinema's opening night programme features a screening of Farewell My Concubine, one of the most popular Chinese films of all time, with opening remarks by director Chen Kaige.

Highlights of the 80-plus-strong film programme include a wide range of offerings under five broad themes:

The Golden Age was defined by the classics of Shanghai cinema, and the work of the tragically short-lived Greta Garbo of China, Ruan Lingyu. The period, running through the 1930s and 1940s, was known not only for the den-of-iniquity and East-meets-West reputation of cosmopolitan Shanghai, but also the challenges of a nation bordering on anarchy. Signature films of the period include The Goddess (Wu Yonggang, 1934) and Spring in a Small Town (Fei Mu, 1948; introduced by TIFF Bell Lightbox Artistic Director Noah Cowan).

A New China picks up in the wake of the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The cinematic output of the new nation saw filmmakers wrestle with the volatile years leading up to the Cultural Revolution. Major films of the era included sweeping patriotic epics, such as Red Detachment of Women (Xie Jin, 1961), alongside gritty war films such as Shangrao Concentration Camp (Sha Meng, 1951), and piercing satires such as the recently rediscovered Unfinished Comedy (Lu Ban, 1957). Meanwhile, an influx of Mainland talent launched a new era in Hong Kong and Taiwan, with such works as the social drama In the Face of Demolition (Li Tie, 1953), and the hit romance, The Winter (Li Han-hsiang, 1969).

Swordsmen, Gangsters and Ghosts: The Evolution of Chinese Genre Cinema highlights the genre films that first brought Chinese cinema to the international stage, including the wuxia (swordplay) films that date back to China's earliest filmmaking days. The genre came alive again in the late 1940s with Wong Fei-hung: The Whip That Smacks the Candle (Wu Pang, 1949), and flourished through the 1960s and 1970s, with films like A Touch of Zen (King Hu, 1969), and Bruce Lee's international ascendance in Fist of Fury (Lo Wei, 1972), while Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee, 2000) brought a renewed international attention to martial-arts film in the new millennium. Meanwhile, guns and gangsters became a Hong Kong trademark, beginning with the long-neglected masterpiece, The Story of a Discharged Prisoner (Patrick Lung Kong, 1967), which was remade as John Woo's landmark 1986 A Better Tomorrow. More recently, a new generation has reinvigorated the genre with films like Infernal Affairs (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2002).

New Waves looks at the moment when Chinese film dominated the international art- film scene. The work ranges from the Hong Kong New Wave exemplified by Ann Hui (Boat People, 1982) and Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues, 1986); to the new generation of Taiwanese masters led by Hou Hsiao-hsien (A City of Sadness, 1989) and Edward Yang (A Brighter Summer Day, 1991); and the Mainland's Fifth Generation directors, including Zhang Junzhao (One and Eight, 1983) and Chen Kaige (Yellow Earth, 1984; Farewell My Concubine, 1993).

In the lead-up to the new millennium, a series of sexy, exciting and formally daring new films built on the New Waves' innovations and sparked a renewed global interest in Chinese cinema. The signature films of New Directions include Chungking Express (Wong Kar- wai, 1994), Vive L'Amour (Tsai Ming-liang, 1994) and The Missing Gun (Lu Chuan, 2002).

Complementing the film programme are an exciting slate of prestigious guests, talks and roundtable discussions. For our In Conversation With… series, TIFF Bell Lightbox Artistic Director Noah Cowan sits down with Mainland director Chen Kaige (June 7 at 8 p.m.) as well as Hong Kong action director Johnnie To (July 13 at 4 p.m.). International superstar Jackie Chan introduces three of his best films: Drunken Master (June 12 at 6 p.m.) and The Legend of Drunken Master (June 12 at 9 p.m.) and Police Story (June 13 at 6 p.m.). Audiences will also get a glimpse of Chan's Police Story 2013 when he unveils a trailer for the upcoming film.

Other programming highlights include: a roundtable discussion on the Fourth and Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers with a key filmmaker from each era (Xie Fei and Chen Kaige, respectively) as well as Chen Biqiang, Senior Research Fellow at the China Film Archive and scholar Bart Testa. Film scholar David Bordwell speaks on the dynamic language of martial-arts cinema and joins fellow scholar James Udden in a discussion about the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien; scholar Bart Testa looks at Ann Hui's Boat People (1982); Hong Kong Film Archive programmer Winnie Fu and film scholar Sam Ho introduce the legendary Wong Fei-hung: The Whip That Smacks the Candle; and director Xie Fei and China Film Archive Director Fu Hongxing introduce Xie's films The Women from the Lake of Scented Souls and Black Snow. Buried Treasures of Chinese Silent Cinema will showcase three of the earliest Chinese films in existence alongside a roundtable discussion: Laborer's Love (Zhang Shichuan, 1922), Romance of the Western Chamber (Hou Yao, 1927) and Red Heroine (Wen Yimin, 1929).

A commemorative iBook will be produced in the fall, featuring a multimedia look back at A Century of Chinese Cinema.

EXHIBITION
An important component of the programme is the main gallery exhibition, which runs from June 7 to August 11 in an exhibition curated by TIFF's Noah Cowan and Shanghai-based curator Davide Quadrio. Yang Fudong's New Women, a 5-channel video installation, is a new commission from the internationally-renowned visual artist. The work is inspired by the decadent atmosphere of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s, a period that has been captured in some of the best-loved Chinese films (several of which are a part of the A Century of Chinese Cinema programme) and remains influential among Chinese artists - and filmmakers in particular - today. The work examines the East-meets-West blend for which Shanghai was (in)famous via the nude form and examines how women, and ideas about women, have represented China's search for modernity over the past hundred years. As a part of the TIFF Cinematheque Free Screen series, our continuing free series dedicated to experimental film and video works, we will also be presenting Yang Fudong's first feature film, An Estranged Paradise in a new 35mm print. Yang Fudong is represented by ShanghART in Shanghai and Marian Goodman Gallery in New York and Paris.

Christopher Doyle is best known as one of the world's great cinematographers (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love), but, in addition to acting, directing and writing, he is also an accomplished visual artist. Away With Words is a long-term project exploring the nature of wordless language, an attempt to reconcile and complicate his residence in a space between cultures and languages. The project is comprised of two multi-channel installations, one of which looks at the five Chinese elements (fire, earth, air, water, wood) through footage collected from a variety of sources including Doyle's own film work, while the other examines Doyle's multiple identities: Christopher Doyle, his given name, and Du-Ke Feng, the Chinese name under which he often works, interview and argue with one another on separate screens - Doyle calls it "a kind of Cinematographer's Fight Club." Doyle will also present a live performance of Away With Words (June 8 at 10 p.m.), extending the work into a third dimension.

The public is invited to join us for a complimentary tour of the exhibition. These 30-minute guided tours start June 9 and run weekly on Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the main gallery. Tours will also be offered in Cantonese and Mandarin every Sunday at 12 p.m.

TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX GALLERIES TO EXHIBIT MAJOR NEW COMMISSIONS BY YANG FUDONG AND CHRISTOPHER DOYLE

Toronto – Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, announced today details of A Century of Chinese Cinema, the flagship programme of TIFF’s summer season. A comprehensive exploration of Chinese film, art and culture, the programme features a major exhibition showcasing the work of leading international visual artist/filmmaker Yang Fudong and famed cinematographer Christopher Doyle. The free exhibitions run from June 7 to August 11, 2013. In addition, a major film retrospective of over 80 titles and onstage sessions with some of the biggest names in Chinese cinema trace the shared cultural and historical connections between the cinemas of the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“Chinese cinema is a dynamic, living thing. It issues from multiple cities, multiple genres and from multiple art forms,” said Cowan. “We are grateful that Yang Fudong and Christopher Doyle have created these extraordinary new works for this exhibition. These two artists base their practice in film and cinema history and not only represent Chinese cinema’s most exciting contemporary developments, but also its future.”

Two concurrent exhibitions will take place at TIFF Bell Lightbox. In the main gallery, TIFF has commissioned New Women, a major new installation by Yang Fudong, one of Mainland China’s leading artists, inspired by 1930s Shanghai cinema. The five-screen work has been curated by TIFF’s Noah Cowan and Shanghai-based curator Davide Quadrio. In the TIFF Bell Lightbox Atrium, Away With Words, a two-part installation by Christopher Doyle, draws from recent Hong Kong cinema history and was curated by Cowan.

One of the most important members of the contemporary Chinese art scene, Shanghai-based Yang Fudong was educated in painting but moved to photography and film in the late nineties and has exhibited in some of the most important venues around the world. Yang’s work epitomizes the tension between China’s recent and rapid modernization and its traditional values and culture, and is informed equally by traditional Chinese painting and by both avant-garde filmmaking and film noir. Yang first came to the Western art world’s attention at Documenta XI in 2002 and the Venice Biennale in 2003 with his debut film, An Estranged Paradise, which will screen as part of the TIFF Cinematheque Free Screen series on June 5 at 7 p.m. in a new 35mm print. Referencing a range of influences from Godard to Jarmusch to 1920s and 1930s Shanghai films, it established the artist as an important new voice of not only his own nation but of the global artistic scene.

Yang’s interest in classic Shanghai film continues with the commission New Women. The five-channel video installation is inspired by the decadence of Shanghai’s swinging 1920s and 1930s, a period that has been captured in some of the best-loved Chinese films – several of which are screen in the A Century of Chinese Cinema programme. That era was defined by “hai pai,” the East-meets-West culture of the city, and the associated imagery remains influential among Chinese artists today. New Women takes a hai-pai approach to examine how women, and ideas about women, have represented China’s search for modernity over the past century. According to Yang Fudong, New Women was informed by An Estranged Paradise, his debut feature film. Yang Fudong is represented by ShanghART in Shanghai and by Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris and New York.

The Australian-born and long-time Hong Kong-based Christopher Doyle is best known as one of the world’s great cinematographers; his work on films including Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love and Hero has not only brought awards and accolades, but signaled new directions for cinematography in general. The public will have many opportunities to enjoy Doyle’s film work over the course of A Century of Chinese Cinema, but will also have a rare chance to experience Doyle’s visual art.

Away With Words is a long-term project exploring the nature of wordless language, an attempt to reconcile and complicate Doyle’s residence in a space between cultures and languages. The project is comprised of two multi-channel installations. One installation looks at the five Chinese elements (fire, earth, air, water, wood) through footage collected from a variety of sources including films Doyle has shot. In the other installation, Doyle examines his multiple identities: Christopher Doyle, his given name, and Du-ke Feng, the Chinese name under which he often works, interview one another on separate screens – Doyle calls it “a kind of Cinematographer's Fight Club” – while a third screen showcases a collage borrowed from several sources. Doyle will also present a free live performance of Away With Words on June 8 at 10 p.m., expanding the work into a third iteration.

Admission to the exhibition is free.

TIFF announces Athens for its 2013 City To City programme

Toronto – Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, and Dimitri Eipides, International Programmer for the Festival, announced today that the city of Athens, Greece will be the focus of the 2013 City to City programme at the 38th Toronto International Film Festival®.

“City to City looks for cinematic hot spots around the world," said Bailey. “We want to introduce our audience to new generations of filmmakers unafraid to rewrite the rules. When we started thinking about the startlingly original films emerging recently from this ancient and contemporary city, the perfect choice for us this year was Athens."

“After a long period of hibernation, Greek cinema has finally found its way back to the forefront. A number of young filmmakers — most of them fresh out of film school or, at best, with a couple of shorts to their name — turned things around. Where others saw devastation, they saw inspiration,” said Eipides. “Working with minimal means, often exchanging services on each other’s productions, they churned out films which gained attention around the world. Hopefully this new wave of international exposure will give Greek cinema the confidence to communicate its message from a position where national boundaries will no longer matter.”

This is the fifth year for the City to City series which showcases filmmakers living and working in a selected city, regardless of where their films are set. Cities featured in past programmes include Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Buenos Aires and Mumbai. The announcement of the City to City lineup will be made in July. The City to City ticket package will go on sale beginning in late June. The 38th Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 5 to 15, 2013.

GLAAD Media Awards 2013 – winners pt 3

GLAAD honored California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Grammy-nominated singer Adam Lambert, and the best in entertainment and journalism on Saturday night at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco. Mel B, Guillermo Diaz, Tamala Jones, Jinkx Monsoon, Rex Lee and Laverne Cox were among the special guests.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories of LGBT people and issues that build support for equality.

At the ceremony, filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom presented GLAAD's Golden Gate Award to her husband, Gavin Newsom. In accepting the award, Newsom said, "There's one fundamental that defines the best of this city, and the best of this organization, and that is we don’t tolerate our diversity, we truly celebrate our diversity. We highlight all those wonderful and interesting differences, but at the end of the day we unite around our common humanity. As Dr. King so eloquently said, 'We are all bound together by a web of mutuality.' We're all in this together."

Melanie Brown, a judge on America's Got Talent and former Spice Girl, presented GLAAD's Davidson/Valentini Award to out singer Adam Lambert. Speaking of the challenges associated with being an out entertainer, Lambert said, "We are right in the middle of two generations with two different perspectives but one common thread - love. With all the differences of opinion both within the LGBT community and elsewhere, the best we can do is to keep it real and to spread a message of acceptance. If we can inspire even one person to open their mind, or another to be who they want to be, whether they're gay or straight, old or young, man or woman, black or white – then it's worth being objectified by the sometimes frustrating world of media sensationalism."

Lambert continued, "Thank you to GLAAD for recognizing my efforts, because I put a lot of effort into this. I think about it a lot (it makes me crazy), but my goal is to try to represent both myself and my community proudly."

The reigning World Series champion San Francisco Giants received the Corporate Leader Award. The Giants are the first professional sports team honored by GLAAD. They were the first ever professional sports team to host an HIV/AIDS benefit game in 1994, and have generated more than $1.3 million for Bay Area HIV/AIDS education. The Giants were also the first major league sports team to record a video for the It Gets Better project, and this month will hold their 11th Annual LGBT Night Out.

Travis Fine, the writer/director of Any Day Now, accepted the award for Outstanding Film - Limited Release. Writer and artist Dan Parent accepted the award for Outstanding Comic Book for the ongoing comic book series Kevin Keller. Journalist Marc Lamont Hill accepted the award for Outstanding Digital Journalism Article for his piece "Why Aren't We Fighting for CeCe McDonald?" which appeared on Ebony.com.

GLAAD also presented Special Recognition Awards to Kevin McClatchy, former owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team who came out in a New York Times article last year, and Brittney Griner, an out basketball player and this year's number one draft pick for the WNBA.

RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon performed for the capacity crowd. Guests included: Tamala Jones (Castle); Guillermo Diaz (Scandal); Jessica Clark (True Blood); Rex Lee (Suburgatory); Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Peter Paige (The Fosters); Jaymes Vaughn, James Davis (The Amazing Race); Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills); Jennifer Biesty, Ryan Scott, Josie Smith-Malave (Top Chef); Laverne Cox, E.J. “Dear Thierry, dear Gilles Jacob, dear Cannes Film Festival,

Thank you for giving us the responsibility of choosing and celebrating films from a very powerful Certain Regard selection 2013.

It is a great honor for us, and the selection has been outstanding in many ways.
One of the finest achievements in filmmaking is to create unforgettable moments - moments that stay with us - as a collective memory - as a collective mirror of our existence.

Clay figures, extreme beauty, violence, homosexual blow jobs, systematic humiliation of the human kind, Léa Seydoux’s legs, great Brando imitations are just some of the unique images that will follow us for a while.

This selection was insistingly unsentimental, and still poetic. It was political, highly original, sometimes disturbing, diverse and first of all, very often - unforgettable.

I once again thank you Thierry, for sharing such a fine extract of the best movies around, with all of us.”

- Thomas VINTERBERG

Three major free outdoor Grands événements

The TD Stage on the Place des Festivals hosts three absolutely essential massive outdoor events to gather and delight Fest fans at 9:30 p.m. Feist gets the ball rolling on Friday, June 28 in the TD Grand Opening Event in collaboration with SiriusXM. At the midpoint of the festival, Tuesday, July 2, brilliant French songwriter-composer-producer-manager and DJ Wax Tailor ignites the party. After burning up the Métropolis in 2010 (opening for Caravan Palace) and L’Astral last year with his invigorating and cinematic blast of orchestral trip-hop and hip-hop, this leading light of the international electronica scene invites in an array of super special guests: Jennifer CharlesCharlotte SavaryMatticA.S.M. and Voice. On Sunday, July 7, the 34th edition of the Festival closes under the colours of Mali with 2 of its most brilliant stars, Amadou & Mariam, our Antonio Carlos-Jobim Award honorees this year! The Rio Tinto Alcan Closing Event welcomes this magical, vibrant duo, who throw a party wherever they appear and unleash a refreshing joie de vivre as powerful as their funky rhythms. Their irresistible musical chemistry reaches full potency on their 7th album, Folila, which they’ll unveil here accompanied by another luminous figure from the inexhaustible Malian music scene: Fatoumata Diawara.
The Festival, stage by stage

TD stage (Place des Festivals)

In addition to these three Grands événements, the Place des Festivals welcomes the prestigious Performances TD series at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Get ready for absolute crowd favourites The Barr Brothers (June 29), who promise a moment of musical magic at the crossroads of folk, rock and blues. On July 1, 30-piece orchestra Mucca Pazza land with their musical hybrid, guaranteed to get the party started! On July 3, Nick Waterhouse makes his first visit to the Festival with the songs from his debut album, Time’s All Gone, which revives the golden age of R&B.

On the same stage, the action kicks off at 6 p.m. with the artists of the Gammes TD series. Effendi’s explosive JazzLab assembles Rémi Bolduc, Alexandre Côté, Frank Lozano, Aron Doyle, Richard Gagnon, John Roney, Alain Bédard and Isaiah Ceccarelli and returns to the Festival on June 29 to mark its 10th anniversary. Then, June 30, the Brad Turner Quartet, celebrated for their creativity and improvisational sensibility, make their Fest debut. On July 4, we welcome pianist and Oscar Peterson protégé Robi Botos, who’s blazed a trail between blues, jazz and the Romany heritage of his ancestors and confirmed his ranking among the leading figures of the next jazz generation by winning the 2012 TD Grand Jazz Award.

Rio Tinto Alcan stage (corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance)

On Ste. Catherine St., the super-accessible Rio Tinto Alcan Stage invites fans to the Soirées jazzy Rio Tinto Alcan series at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. On July 3, Kellylee Evans, who charmed us all with Nina, her 2011 Juno-winning tribute album to Nina Simone, presents a turn towards hip-hop and R&B with her recent album, I Remember When. On July 5, French singer Laïka follows in the wake of the grand dames of jazz vocal, presenting a song recital of great finesse, revisiting standards with a subtle emotion. The following evening (July 6), robust Cajun quartet Lost Bayou Ramblers, proud standard-bearers of the Louisiana scene, present their latest album Mammoth Waltz, steeped in rock energy.

Grande-Place stageComplexe Desjardins

With summer holidays barely begun, it’s time for the entire family to head back into class with La Petite école du jazz (Little School of Jazz), presented by Rio Tinto Alcan every day at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., from June 28 to July 7! Les Zélèves, a vocal harmony quintet led by Victor-Jacques Ménard, along with James Gelfand and his quartet, and the festival mascot, Ste-Cat, are delighted to bring jazz to young and old alike with this dynamic, interactive and fun-filled musical initiation, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! Immediately afterwards, at 3 p.m. on June 29-30 and July 6, families can keep the festivities going and stretch their legs to music at the Musique en famille avec les ateliers Samajam, a playful percussion workshop presented by Rio Tinto Alcan, principal partner in the Samajam stay-in-school project since 2011.

Loto-Québec stage (Parterre of the Maison symphonique de Montréal, corner of De Montigny and Clark)

Head over to the essential Spectacles blues Loto-Québec series at 7 p.m. for blues, blues and more… rock! On July 1, the Festival welcomes Canadian guitarist David Gogo, passionate defender of the blues twice named Guitarist of the Year by the Maple Blues Awards, here to unveil an album due this summer. On July 3, fiery blues singer Angel Forrest promises a hot, hot evening featuring her brand new single, Mother Tongue Blues. To close out the series with a very special shot of rock’n’roll July 7, the Porn Flakes roll out a triple-bill devoted to the Rolling Stones (which continues in the Soirées blues Loto-Québec series): a set of ’60s hits, the legendary Exile on Main Street album in its entirety (9 p.m.) and an overview of the ’70s and beyond (11 p.m.).

Les Soirées blues Loto-Québec take command of the night at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. with the most talented ambassadors of the genre. The human incarnation of practically the entire history of Québécois blues from the ’70s forward, singer-guitarist Bob Walsh carries his ever-blazing blues torch in July 2, testifying songs from his latest album, There’s a Story Here… French harmonica blower and singer Nico Wayne Toussaint, a devotee of Chicago blues, hits the Festival for the first time July 4 with a repertoire of mainly originals, including a couple in French. The following night (July 5), get set for a refreshing duo from the west coast, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, Shawn “The Harpoonist” Hall and Matthew “The Axe Murderer” Rogers, and raw, primal, feverish blues that transcends time to cross the ancient icons (Robert Johnson) with the modern slingers (Jack White).

Bell Stage (Clark North esplanade)

The mercury should be at the perfect level for the Tropiques Bell series at 8 p.m.! Twenty years after her first Festival visit, grand dame Lorraine Klaasen comes in June 29 to share her most recent creation, Tribute to Miriam Makeba, Juno winner for Best World Music Album this year. On July 5, Christine Salem, maloya singer from Ile de La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, brings a new album, Salem tradition, in which her deep, warm voice is marvelously suited to the Indian Ocean blues she lays over a bed of diabolical rhythms. The series concludes July 7 with the Fest debut of world music discovery Fatoumata Diawara and Fatou, her spellbinding acoustic guitar album weaving traditional Wassoulou chants laced with modern rhythms and tinged with a jazz/blues ambience.

The evening rolls on with the Groove Bell series at 10 p.m., when Fest fans can enjoy the first ever Festival visit by versatile English saxophonist Soweto Kinch (June 29), veteran jazzman and hip-hop star, armed with his new album, The Legend of Mike Smith. On July 3, Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band serve up their magic potion mixing funk, soul, calypso, Afrobeat and spoken word as shaken up on their latest album, produced by Meshell Ndegeocello. Multilingual/multicultural supergroup Nomadic Massive fire up the party July 6 with songs blending soul, reggae and Afro-Caribbean rhythms from their latest EP, Any Sound.

CBC/Radio-Canada Stage (Clark South esplanade)

As evening falls, the Brunantes CBC/Radio-Canada series lights up the stage at 7 p.m., presenting many of the musicians nominated for the TD Grand Jazz Award. Among them, 2013 Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada winner Jérôme Beaulieu lands on June 30 with his repertoire of contempo jazz peppered with rock and pop, and with songs from a new album on the way. On July 4, Quetango Quartet fuse tango, jazz and progressive rock and unveil material from their brand new album, Musica Urbana. One of the most brilliant young pianists on the Canadian scene, John Roney follows July 5 with pieces from his 3rd album, St-Henri, reaching beyond the realm of post-bop to embrace modern sounds.

Come on down at 9 p.m. for concerts in the Rendez-vous series. On June 30, Canadian composer and saxophonist Becky Noble, named “Best New Talent” at the 2012 Jazz en rafale festival, heads in with her first album of original material, Salish Folk Song. Finally back after a lovely performance in 2009, Japan’s Nobuki Takamen presents recent album Three Wishes on July 4, gilded with lyrical, melodious, fluid jazz compositions. The series concludes July 7 with Francis et ses peintres, led by fantasist French singer Katerine, unveiling pop songs joyously jazzily remodeled, as found on their recent release, 52 reprises dans l’espace.

Lounge Heineken(Parc des Festivals, corner of De Bleury St. and De Maisonneuve Blvd.)

In the Lounge Heineken series, fans can bask in the sounds of two concerts, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., while enjoying a cocktail. On June 29, Jordan Officer, master of the 6-string, invites us to an intimate rendezvous before heading off to New York, playing songs from his new, bluesier EP. Veteran bluesman Martin Goyette, known for his super-unique voice, blows in July 3 with the blues, funk, rock and soul of new album Sweet Warm Jelly. Texan guitarist and singer Shakey Graves follows July 4-5 with his old school acoustic blues.

L’Astral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305 Ste. Catherine St. W.)

Beginning at midnight, the dancefloor in L’Astral lights up into the wee hours with the Open House series. Born in semi-secrecy in a Montreal loft three years ago, the Speakeasy Electro Swing soirées invade the place June 28-30 to get nighthawks dancing up a storm. July 1-3, S. MOS & Friends of France load in the keyboards, turntables and other machines, fusing the smoothest rap flows with the finest in jazz rhythms. Then, the hottest Franco-Anglo duo on the Montréal reggae-dub scene, Sud-West Ghostbeard & Poirier, take up the baton July 4-7 with one marching order: get everyone dancing until they can dance no more!

Bistro Le Balmoral (Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305 Ste. Catherine St. W.)

Twice every evening at 10 p.m. and midnight, the Musique au Balmoral series presents free 45-minute concerts without intermission. June 28-30, double bassist Alexandre Bellegarde offers his tasty jazz-world in a duo with a different guest each night. Ranked among the finest guitarists of his generation, Stéphane Tellier moves in July 1-2 for a high-voltage duet with another six-string ace renowned for his fingerstyle mastery: Dan Livingstone. July 3-4, Shlomo and Julie offer their charming blend of folk, acoustic blues, ragtime…. The series closes with Viva Nova July 5-6, featuring singer, guitarist, percussionist and keyboardist Micäel Lüssi and a repertoire of Brazilian jazz, captivating rhythms and elegant grooves.

Savoy du Métropolis (59 Ste. Catherine St. E.)

Nighthawks can also cut loose on the dancefloor in the Savoy at midnight in the Nightcap Heineken series. Montreal combo Le Matos set the tone June 28-30 with their electro-house nocturne. Next, July 1-3, local groovemasters Afrodizz, specializing in high-octane Afrobeat and funk. Papagroove close things out July 4-7 with the wild rhythms of their fresh-baked album, Civilized Ghetto!

The music starts at noon!

Rio Tinto Alcan stage (corner of Ste. Catherine and Jeanne-Mance), CBC / Radio-Canada stage (corner of Clark and Ste. Catherine), Place des Festivals and Lounge Heineken (Parc des Festivals, corner of De Bleury St. and De Maisonneuve Blvd.)

Every day of the Festival, the festivities kick off at noon! The finest jazz bands from high schools and cegeps show off their burgeoning chops for Festival fans on the Rio Tinto Alcan stage in the series JazzFest des jeunes, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan atnoon and 3 p.m. The action continues in the afternoon: high-energy musical entertainment takes over the Place des Festivals (at 1 p.m., 2 p.m.), the Place des Arts esplanade (4 p.m.), or the Lounge Heineken (in front of the stage) at noon1 p.m. and 4 p.m. At 4 p.m.Les Envolées du Festival presents university groups on the CBC/Radio-Canada stage (and, on June 28 and July 2-5, in the Grande-Place in Complexe Desjardins), just before fans roll into the Rencontres festives, at 5 p.m., featuring two bands playing their own separate sets at either end of the Place des Festivals, then meeting in the middle for a joyous “musical battle”—right in the midst of the crowd! A free concert in Métropolis

On June 29 at 10 p.m., we’ve added a free concert to the Métropolis program: the Jean Millaire Blues Marathon—100 years of Muddy Waters. It was the perfect occasion: this year, celebrations mark the 100th anniversary of Muddy Waters’ birth all over America. And who better than Jean Millaire, renowned since the late ’60s as the best blues guitarist in Québec, to host this free event? Four hours of continuous music, with more than 15 artists onstage. Party time!

Festival boutiques and restos

Festival fans can always find everything they need to fill up and quench their thirst on the Festival site. A craving? They can snack it up at the Barbecue, the hot-dog and Häagen-Dazs ice cream bar carts or, for a more exotic touch, taste the delectable creations at the mango-flower or porchetta kiosks. They can enjoy Italian homemade pasta at Wienstein & Gavino’s, delicious Argentinean grilled sandwiches at L’Atelier d’Argentine or a wide variety of cold soups, sandwiches and salads at SoupeSoup. They can also select from the wide variety of thirst-quenching options on the site, from the relaxed ambience of the Lounge Heineken to the friendly counters of the Jazz Bars HeinekenBar Amarula or Bistro Express SAQ, the tempting terrasses of the Bar TerrasseTerrasse Amarula or Bistros SAQ, delectably diverse port tastings at the Kiosque Porto Cabral or coffee at Café Jura… Finally, theTerrasse Élixirs, the enlarged Balmoral terrasse, located right on the Place des Festivals, can welcome Festival fans in full sunshine and in the heart of the action! Also, the Festival once again joins forces with Naya to offer the Fontaine Naya, a “refueling service” for bottled spring water offered for a small fee, in an effort to reduce the number of water bottles purchased. And for the more jazzistically-inclined “musicovores”, the Festival souvenir boutiques offer an extensive array of official Festival products, including t-shirts bearing the Ste-Cat logo, albums by everyone from legends to newly-discovered artists, posters, caps, etc.

Serge Lemoyne in the Galerie Lounge TD

The Galerie Lounge TD, located in the exhibition hall of Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme, Place des Arts, during the Festival, offers a treasure trove of works by artists from every provenance who share a common passion for jazz. The 34th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is proud to present, from June 28 to July 7, Bleu Blanc Rouge, a piece by Serge Lemoyne reproduced as a limited-edition silkscreen, numbered and signed. Additionally, throughout the Festival run, fans can purchase a silkscreen of official poster Crossroads, inspired by the Afro-American musical and cultural crosspollination at the very roots of jazz, as well as other original works by our artist in residence for over 25 years, Yves Archambault.

TIFF’s original film exhibition David Cronenberg: Evolution spearheads an ambitious, multi-platform celebration of the work of the iconic Canadian filmmaker

Toronto – Details of The Cronenberg Project, a multi-platform celebration of the work of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, David Cronenberg, were announced today by Piers Handling, CEO and Director, TIFF and Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox. Running from November 1, 2013 to January 19, 2014, the core component of The Cronenberg Project is a comprehensive film exhibition titled David Cronenberg: Evolution, curated by Handling and Cowan. The exhibition, which will be presented at TIFF Bell Lightbox in the HSBC Gallery, explores the world of David Cronenberg by tracing his development and progression as a filmmaker through the themes of physical and psychological transformation that define his cinema; from telepaths and scientists to television producers and twin doctors. This also marks the first major original exhibition curated and launched by TIFF that will tour internationally with locations to be announced at a later date.

The Cronenberg Project also includes an experiential virtual museum called David Cronenberg: Virtual Exhibition; a full retrospective of Cronenberg’s films with multiple newly struck 35mm prints and new digital restorations; an interactive digital experience titled Body/Mind/Change, a Lance Weiler project and co-production with TIFF and CFC Media Lab; an art exhibition curated by Noah Cowan and David Liss titled David Cronenberg: Transformation, presented in partnership with the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA); and two original publications celebrating the film and art exhibitions. David Cronenberg: Transformation will run from September 5 to December 29, 2013 at MOCCA, with the opening reception taking place on September 4 just in time for the Toronto International Film Festival.

“After collaborating with some of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world to bring highly anticipated film exhibitions to Canada, we are excited to reach this major milestone at TIFF Bell Lightbox by originating a show of our own to share with the international community,” said Handling. “This exhibition underscores our commitment as an organization to Canadian film and its legacy, and presenting and celebrating David Cronenberg is a natural choice.”

“David Cronenberg is among the world’s great filmmakers and we feel fortunate to have worked with him on multiple projects over the last 30 years, including the creation of a Special Collection archive in TIFF’s Film Reference Library, which has yielded the most spectacular elements of this show,” added Cowan. “The Cronenberg Project is the culmination of this relationship and we are thankful to David and the many participating institutions and individuals who are collaborating on this enterprise to create a significant global impact on behalf of this extraordinary artist.”

Highlights of David Cronenberg: Evolution include key pieces and materials from Cronenberg’s extensive filmography—including costumes, props, photographs, audio-visual elements, art work and set-design drawings—such as the helmet from Videodrome (1983), the game consoles from eXistenZ (1999), the surgical tools from Dead Ringers (1988), the leg braces from Crash (1996), the typewriters from Naked Lunch (1991), and the pod from The Fly (1986).

David Cronenberg: Virtual Exhibition, launching online and in the CIBC Gallery on November 1, explores Cronenberg’s films through new scholarship and artistic explorations, including essays, academic writing, an interactive map and timeline, and a selection of rare behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Cronenberg's past and present collaborators. A natural extension of TIFF’s Higher Learning programming and Digital Resource Hub, David Cronenberg: Virtual Exhibition looks to enhance educational opportunities within the academic community and the public at large to stimulate ongoing research in Cronenberg’s filmography.

David Cronenberg: Transformation at MOCCA will feature six new, TIFF-commissioned artworks from leading Canadian and international contemporary artists who share Cronenberg’s inspirations from literature and philosophy—writers such as McLuhan, Burroughs and Ballard—and his fascination with biological horror, the human psyche and the merging of humans and media. Artists featured: Candice Breitz, James Coupe, Marcel Dzama, Jeremy Shaw, Jamie Shovlin and Laurel Woodcock.

Body/Mind/Change, a digital extension of David Cronenberg: Evolution, immerses users/audiences in a “Cronenbergian” world across three platforms—online, mobile, and real life—through an “artificial intelligence recommendation engine” called POD (Personal On-Demand). Users can sign up now at www.bodymindchange.ca to register for a POD and enter into this story-world experience, which will launch in October and culminate with a physical hub inside the CIBC Canadian Film Gallery. Body/Mind/Change provides the opportunity for the audience to become a part of the exhibition and to explore the dark landscape where Cronenberg’s stories live.

Evolution, the opening celebration for the exhibition David Cronenberg: Evolution, will take over TIFF Bell Lightbox for the evening of Wednesday, October 30, featuring live entertainment, interactive art installations, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are now on sale at tiff.net/cronenbergparty, proceeds will support annual film programming at TIFF along with education and community initiatives.

Announcements with further details will be made in the coming months.
