Tonight at the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, the presentation for the Jameson Empire Awards took place, with comedian Ed Byrne hosting the evening's festivities.

Skyfall picked up Best Film, with director Sam Mendes also winning Best Director and a special Empire Inspiration award for good measure. The awards, voted for by fans, also saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey take Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Best Actor for Martin Freeman, while Jennifer Lawrence was voted Best Actress for The Hunger Games.

Elsewhere, Sightseers won Best British Film and Headhunters took Best Thriller, while Best Comedy went to Ted. Hammer's The Woman In Black was Best Horror, and its star Daniel Radcliffe won an Empire Hero prize. Best Male Newcomer was The Impossible's Tom Holland, while Samantha Barks was Best Female Newcomer following her turn in Les Misérables.

Danny Boyle took the Outstanding Contribution award with typical modesty, saying that the biggest contribution he made was with that Bond-starring "Skyfall trailer" at the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Helen Mirren, meanwhile, was dubbed an Empire Legend, while laughing that she was "more of a leg-over".

The 31st Annual Festival International du Film sur l'Art (International Festival of Films on Art) or FIFA, presented in association with Astral, closed on Sunday with supplementary screenings of some twenty films. From March 14 to 24, FIFA’s legions of fans were able to enjoy a total of 248 films from 28 countries, embracing a wide range of artistic disciplines, at nine of Montreal’s most prominent cultural institutions. For the first time, FIFA proudly presented recent works from Cuba, Cambodia, South Korea and the Bahamas.

The international jury of the 31st FIFA, presided over by Olivier Kaeppelin, director of the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (France), revealed the 12 prizewinners from 8 countries at the Awards Ceremony held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts last Saturday, March 23. The other jury members included American filmmaker and composer Michael House; New Brunswick producer, director and screenwriter Monique LeBlanc; Quebec producer Michel Ouellette; and Belgian producer-director Françoise Wolff.

Once again, festival goers voted in large numbers throughout the Festival for their favourite Canadian film in French. The 2013 ARTV People’s Choice Award was thus attributed to Corno by Guy Edoin.

FIFA is proud to announce that 5 Canadian works are among the winning films.

A rich program!
The Festival’s founding director René Rozon, together with the spokespersons of the 31st edition, Anne Lagacé Dowson and Patrick Masbourian, continually emphasized the richness of this year’s program. As testimony to this, over 20 films were scheduled as additional screenings by popular demand.

Architecture, literature, painting and music were among the disciplines spotlighted with Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Masterwork by Kenneth Love, The Barrágan House—A Universal Value by Tufic Makhlouf Akl, Amélie Nothomb, une vie entre deux eaux by Luca Chiari, Salvador Dalí, génie tragi-comique by François Lévy-Kuentz, and George Harrison: Living in the Material World by Martin Scorsese.

Also enjoying great success were the opening film, The Fatwa—Salman’s Story by Jill Nicholls, the closing Awards Ceremony film, Road movie, un portrait de John Adams by Mark Kidel, and the Benefit Gala film La Toile blanche d’Edward Hopper by Jean-Pierre Devillers. Such Quebec films as Huguette Oligny, le goût de vivre by Pascal Gélinas, Corno by Guy Édoin, and Dans un océan d’images by Helen Doyle were also immensely popular.

Back for a second year in a row, the Children’s Corner captivated budding film-lovers. And the Art Film Matinées, presented in association with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for a fifth straight year, once again delighted festival goers and the Museum VIPs.

The collaboration between ARTV and FIFA again allowed numerous festival goers to visit the exhibition Chefs de fil at the ARTVstudio in the heart of Place des Arts. Presented after Olivier Nicklaus’ film Fashion, the exhibition is devoted to local designers, including Denis Gagnon, Eve Gravel, Marie Saint-Pierre and Philippe Dubuc. It is open to the public and runs until April 27.

The series of Special Events, presented by Loto-Québec, explored diverse themes in roundtables led by a variety of specialists. It included meetings with filmmakers Pascal Gélinas, Joe Balass, Guy Édoin, Patrick O’Connor, writer Naïm Kattan, painter Johanne Corneau, actress Geneviève Rioux, the venerable doyen of theatre Gilles Pelletier, designers Denis Gagnon and Eve Gravel, and many others.

Back for a third consecutive year, the Master Classes were led this time by filmmakers Gerald Fox and Paul Smaczny were among the highlights of this year’s Special Events.

The video installation WallPaper by Ed Pien, presented by FIFA and the Cinémathèque québécoise (Salle Norman-McLaren) until April 7, met with great enthusiasm, as did the live performances of Snow Mounds by Johannes Zits and John Porter’s Super 8—The Cinema According to John Porter.

This year’s festival paid tribute to the brilliant documentary filmmaker Gerald Fox, presenting a dozen of his works, including Brazil With Caetano Veloso, Claes Oldenburg and Marianne Faithfull—A Life in Song, in addition to a magnificent exhibition entitled Cinematic Tableaux.

Finally, after much-noted performances by Zilon (2011) and Stéphane Dionne (2012), it was Diane Obomsawin’s turn to occupy the interactive urban space of Zon’Arts, with works entitled Fleurs and Machine.

Beyond our borders
This year FIFA welcomed professionals from 19 countries, including several television broadcasters and distributors. For a third year in a row, FIFA presented the International Market of Films on Art (MIFA), the only event of its kind in the world, from March 20 to 23. Participants took advantage of the numerous services and activities offered, including the Vidéothèque, private screenings, pitch sessions, networking cocktails, master classes and roundtables on such subjects as the under-financing of films on art, marketing techniques, and films on art as outreach tools. Again this year, the meeting coordination service helped set up numerous encounters among accredited professionals, leading to new collaborations and the acquisition of films and video.

FIFA and the prizewinners of its 31st edition will be in the spotlight throughout 2013-2014 with its annual world tour in Europe and the United States. First stop on the tour, however, is Quebec City, next May 18 and 19 at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Montreal will get its chance next fall, as part of the Art Film Matinées presented at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, which will begin with the Journées de la Culture next September 29.

The Films on Art Discoveries will be back in Montreal’s Maisons de la culture, its cultural centres, as well as a number of libraries, during a tour of films from the 30th edition. The tour’s 2013-2014 season, presented in collaboration with the Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée, will feature 16 screenings of 7 films at 10 cultural venues, from fall to spring. Special guests will be invited to lead discussions on the films presented.

Your WorldView has teamed up with the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the largest documentary festival, market and conference in North America, to launch an exclusive online pitching opportunity to be awarded a £1,000 grant to fund a short film, as part of the Your WorldView Thought for Food season.

Filmmakers will have only 3 weeks to tweet their pitch for a short film on ‘food’. The 140-character pitches will then be judged by both organisations and a shortlist of 6 will be asked to film their pitches and submit them to Your WorldView. The winner will be announced at the ‘I’ve pitched. Now what?’ session on Friday 3 May and via Twitter at the 20th Hot Docs, running from 25 April to 5 May 2013. The winner will receive a grant of £1,000 to turn their idea into a reality.

Filmmakers do not need to be present at the festival to enter – they can be anywhere in the world and only need a creative idea for a short film about food. Tweets must include the hashtag #HDWVfooddoc.

We’re asking filmmakers: What’s eating you about food? Will we have to change the way we grow, and buy, food? Should everyone stop eating meat? What does food mean to you culturally or spiritually? What are your stories behind the food we eat?

Proposed films should be no longer than 5 minutes.

The deadline for tweets is 15 April 2013.

    Get the cameras rolling!
Filmmakers have until September 23, 2013 to submit.

TORONTO, CANADA, April 1, 2013 – The EstDocs Documentary Film Festival in Toronto is now accepting domestic and international submissions for the Short Documentary Film Competition. The complete EstDocs festival will run from October 18 -22, 2013.

The prize for the competition is generously sponsored by the Estonian Student’s Society and Tartu College. There is $2,500 CAD in prizing and the maximum single prize is $1000 CAD.

“EstDocs short films resonate with audiences; we notice this year after year. Each time we view a film submission, we are transported into a unique tale, interpreted from the filmmaker’s lens,” said Tauno Mölder, Short Documentary Film Competition Director. “The short film competition continues to gain momentum on an international scale, last year’s instant viral hit ‘Kati and Me’ proved that one can create a film about Estonians and not be of Estonian descent, nor does one have to be Estonian to appreciate the beauty of the story which is presented.”

The theme for this year’s competition is“An Estonian Tale”. Participants are encouraged to submit a short film based on their interpretation of the assigned theme.

    Submission Process
The entry form and guidelines for the Short Film Competition are available on the website www.EstDocs.com. Past competition submissions are available for viewing at Youtube.com/EstDocsTO.

The EstDocs Short Film Competition continues to be the only international short film contest of its kind to focus on Estonian-themed content. Entrants may submit films by mail for the September 23, 2013 deadline. The maximum length for films is seven minutes, excluding credits. Winning submissions and honorary mentions will be announced and screened in Toronto film venues for EstDocs audiences.

Films should be submitted on DVD in NTSC or PAL format. Filmmakers may submit multiple entries, but each film requires a separate entry form. Each film must be submitted separately (on a separate DVD).

When Fernand, furious to learn his wife tangos with the guard, asks the Argentinean boss for dancing lessons, the tango works its passionate magic and an air of freedom and fantasy blows through the prison.

Tango libre (Dance to Freedom) is not the only film this year to revolve around prison life. France’s Ombline, entirely shot in a real prison, is director Stéphane Cazes’ debut feature. Cazes delivers a powerful film about a young woman having to earn the right to raise her baby in prison. In Belgium’s biting satirical fable Dead Man Talking, in which prisoner William Lamers, condemned to death, is allowed to make his last statement … but law does not specify how long the statement can last.

This year’s Cinéfranco deals with social conscience and women fighting for their dignity in Egypt’s Les Femmes du Bus 678 (Cairo 678) and women fighting for their identity in Québec’s La Mise à l’aveugle (Small Blind)La Mise à l’aveugle (Small Blind) Director Simon Galiero and Actress Micheline Bernard will be in attendance.

The poignant film, Catimini, focuses on girls being bumped from one foster home to another. Québec Director Nathalie Saint-Pierre will be in attendance.

Many irresistible comedies can be seen at this year’s festival; mocking American soap operas (La Clinique de L’amour! (Sex, Lies and Surgery), the tyranny of a beauty-obsessed society (Mince alors! (Big is Beautiful) or the way seniors cope with life and marijuana (Paulette).

France’s quirky film, Queen of Montreuil takes us on a sweeping fantasy, where a widow tries to build her life back after the death of her husband and in Ich Bin Eine Terroristin, a precocious pre-teen looks for Rosa Luxemburg’s heritage.

Popular comedies at this year’s Cinéfranco include Comme un Chef (The Chef), Un Bonheur n’arrive jamais seul (Happiness Never Comes Alone), La Vérité si je mens! 3 (Would I lie To You? 3), Le Prénom (What’s In A Name), Camille redouble (Camille Rewinds) and Mariage à Mendoza (Welcome To Argentina), starring well-known actors like Jean Reno, Sophie Marceau, José Garcia, Patrick Bruel, Noémie Lvosky and Nicolas Duvauchelle.

Human tragedy is epitomized by two very different, yet compelling films in this year’s Cinéfranco, both films are based on true stories: À Perdre la raison (Our Children) chronicles the descent into hell of a mother played by award winning actress Emilie Dequenne. Québec’s L’Affaire Dumont, ‘Best Feature Film’ nominee at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, stars Marc-André Grondin (Goon) and Marilyn Castonguay who play a couple fighting against the Québec justice system and based on true story of Michel Dumont who was unfairly condemned for the rape of Danielle Lechasseur.

Ce que le jour doit à la nuit (What the Day Owes the Night) from France and directed by Alexandre Arcady, tells the tale of little Younes who is witness to his father’s descent into hell. A faithful adaptation of the novel by Yasmina Khadra, the film powerfully distils the gashing dilemma of the protangist’s legitimate place in his country.

Justice, or lack of it, also plays its role in the compelling documentary Les Invisibles, which focuses on men and women born in between the two world wars. Their stories are told in this documentary as they bear the scars of their fight for sexual freedom in a country (France) that considered homosexuality a mental illness until 1981. Monique Issele (Witness) will be in attendance.

The quest for law and order is prevalent in Mains armées (Armed Hands), a thriller in which Lucas, a 46 year old anti-arm trafficking official from Marseille and Maya, a 25 year old narcotics cop from Paris, find themselves bonding beyond the trails and tribulations of their job. Pierre Jolivet (Prix Polar Winner at the Festival du Polar de Cognac 2012) directs this action family drama which stars Leïla Bekhti, Marc Lavoine, and Roschdy Zem.
